Multiple Catalytic Converters?

OK, So here's a stupid question.

My car will have to undergo emissions testing here in Dallas soon.

I'm worried I won't pass with so many miles.

My question is. If Cats help you pass emissions, then why not mount 2 of them in-line.

Forgive my ignorance, but it's the old, if one is good, then two must be better syndrome.

Thanks,

Billy

no need to feel dumb. Ford does this on new trucks and v8 cars. My dad's 96 crown vic police interceptor has 4 cats on the true duals i believe. I heard that the new f 150s have 5 cats. Cats restrict power, that's why hot rodders hate em, and try to avoid em, but if you get ones that don't restrict much it shouldn't matter, but most good cats that aren't burnt out get rid of almost al of the chemicals that their supposed to.

The cats that Ford (and others) mount in series are actually two different types.

A 3-way high-flow cat is typically fine if everything else is in order.

I live in Dallas and I've got an '85 camaro with a stock LG4 and 187k miles on it. It passes without a problem. My suggestion to you is to go get just an emissions test without the inspection and see if it passes before you go out and spend a lot of money on cats. I did it a couple of weeks ago and it only cost about $13. Even if it doesn't pass, you can always go to Autozone and spend about $5 on some stuff called emissions pass test that dramatically lowers the CO and HC levels on the tank of gas that you put it in.

By the way, they're making the test much more strict in May so I suggest you do it before then.
