Brilliant response from Edelbrock.

So, here's a message I sent to Edelbrock:

---

I am currently running a mild 355ci. with your edelbrock headers (part
#6871) specificly meant for the 82-87 LG4 camaro/firebird. These are hooked
to a dinky 2.25" Y-pipe that becomes even dinkier with a 2.25" exit to my
cat, which is then hanked up to a 3" catback exhaust. (I dunno man, prev.
owner did all this)

Question: Can I order up *just* the Y-pipe from part #6872, (same car,
except with 2.5" y-pipe with 3" exit) - the headers are still in good shape,
and i dont want to order up a whole package. I couldn't find a part# for
this.

--- Response: ---

Sorry we don't do custom pipes. Unless this is a drag car that tubing size
will be fine.

-- end o quote ---

Custom pipes??!? I just want a part# damnit!
That tubing size will be fine?!? Running 300+ horse through a 2.25" tube is not fine.

I'm thinking of going full-on SLP 1 3/4" headers into a 3" catback, perferably Hooker.

Sigh.
Edelbrock sucks.

Yea that sucks!! Dont do custom pipes I guess they couldent read "Question: Can I order up *just* the Y-pipe from part #6872"

Maybe you should just send another email under a different account and ask if they just sell the Y pipe for #6872 and if so what part number is it. Just leave it to the numbers and dont get into details they seem to get confused too easy.
If that fails just go to a muffler shop, at least you can dictate what you want done.

One more reason why I'm not that impressed with anything edelbrock other than their intake manifolds.

Perhaps my little background "this is my car" speal just confused him. I think I will try again but be a little more to the point.

If no dice, I'll just swap out the Y-collector with one of those Flowmaster pieces, one that's been sitting in my closet for 6 months.

SHeesh.

Well, I know you can actually get just the Y-pipe, but I don't know the part number. I had a friend call up and see if he could do this after the Y-pipe on his GTA rotted out..... He just wanted to get the Y-pipe to save on money. He had called Summit and they said it was $95 for the Y-pipe alone....

But I am thinking that you will run into collector problems as the collectors on your headers are smaller than the ones that have the larger Y-pipe IIRC....

Good Luck!!

the Headman Y-pipe uses 3" collectors but shrinks down to 2.5" before the "Y", and then up to 2.75 after the "Y". Its about $90. Not sure if it will match up to the Edel headers (probably not). But then again the Hedman shorties are only about $110.

Good Luck,
JK

I got the same type of response from Hooker when I emailed them about the 1.9" opening at the collector ball flange on the 2055 headers - "It won't affect performance because the gases have slowed down by the time they get there. The opening has to be that size to get a good seal."

I opened them up to 2-1/4", anyway. No leaks, runs great.

I don't think anyone would argue that SLP makes the best performing headers for our cars.

Did you call summit or jegs and ask them? They'd prolly be able to help better.

READ THIS!!!!

I just ordered my Y-pipe from summit...just give them the part number EDL-6872. It will be just under $70 to get it to your doorstep. They might have to order it from Edelbrock, but it will be worth the wait (approx. 2 weeks)

Kyle
