Pro's and Cons: Dumped vs. Catback???
I'm thinking about going with dumped exhaust if I get headers. I'm just wondering what you all think about this. It seems to me these are the pro's and con's I can think of right off hand...
Catback:
more expensive
quieter(probably)
looks(tips exiting in rear of car, etc etc)
Dumped exhaust:
cheaper
loud(most likely)
no tips to deal with(nasty rust, cleaning, lining up)
more power?
Dumped exhaust is pretty much the headers, y pipe, cat(if you wanted), muffler, and a turn down on the muffler right? I dunno, which would probably make more power? I'd think that since the catback goes farther it would probably make more backpressure and therefore more torque? And the dump would have less length to travel and have more high end? Also, my dad doesn't like the idea of the exhaust just coming out under the car. Would that be a major problem? Like exhaust fumes leaking into the interior or anything like that? Can anyone recomend a good muffler if I did dump the exhaust? Are the dynomax 'race mufflers' good, aren't they like a glasspack? Thanks.

Another thing to consider is if you have to go through emissions or not. Here in AZ, if you don't have an exhaust pipe they can see without getting "under" the car, they won't even test you. It's stupid but they must be afraid of getting dirty or something.

I'm pretty sure dumped exhaust still uses a muffler... don't it? I know like 2 or 3 people that have dumped exhaust and it's still got a muffler.

i am dumping mine. headers, the ypipe, a straight piped cat an i pipe with a flowmaster delat force two chamber race muffler and a turn down right before the rear axle
i guess you could argue what "dumped" means exactly... but my plans for when i do my exhaust are headers coming to an x-pipe, no cats (no emission tests in michigan...woo hoo!!), and then a muffler on each exhaust pipe, which will then be dumped before the axle. The way i see it is dumping the exhaust is a lot easier then bending a pipe for over the axle.
Really I dont think there would be too much of a performance difference as long as you get a decent cat-back......so its more or less perference and how much money you wanna spend....just remember you have a lot of options to choose from so make sure you get what's right for you

the pipe is like 82 bux and a muffler is like 60 bux. so thats 140 + labor to weld it up. a hooker cat-back is 200 + labor to weld it up. i think the dump may be a lil cheaper. altough i really like my current dual tailpipe setup

Can anyone tell me about the exhaust fumes? Like if I have it dumped underneath the car, will I have problems with fumes leaking into the interior? I don't really want to die ya know?
I want the sound/tone that straight pipe made on my 305 (it was cut just before the axel) but about half as loud. Can anyone recomend a good muffler for this?

my dumps had a muff on it in my 71 camaro
the fumes where not that bad unless you are sitting still for a while then they get in the car
other then that I had an exhaust leak from my header that gave me a little fumes but before that I didn't notice any fumes in the car
and as for performance the only thing I could think of is with the shorter exhaust pipe you might have it better tuned for a higher rpm motor though I dont think you would get much difference from just that
