shorties and y-pipe

I plan on installing headers on my car sometime this week 85 305,
shorties.
Can I modify the y-pipe to fit or do I have to buy a new one(trying to save some cash)?

I'm also considering using the stock Y-pipe and bolting on some shorties for now (unit the engine gets pulled).
The stock y-pipe is restrictive though which has stopped me up till now.

I hate to say it but you should just go ahead and buy a y-pipe. i did the same thing on my car and just went and bought a headman y-pipe for $100 at jegs. i was in the same boat as you, tight on my money, but it's worth it.

Rob, Which headers did you get for your 305? I'm stuck between AIR, no AIR and Hooker or Hedman

I actually bought the headers off demonz28 for $60.00 U.S
He never used them.
They are the Summit brand of headers. They are no AIR.If you want to save a bit of money go with the Hedman headers.

Yeah, but what about long term quality?? I like that fact that hedman offers a y-pipe with their headers and all at a good cost, but I'm not sure about their quality. Are the flanges going to warp?? Is the collector going to be an issue??

P.S. - How much does it cost from Jet Hot to get both the y-pipe and the headers coated; or can you do that through summit (kind of like where you can get any Hookers coated)?

Rob, are the Summit headers shorties?? If so, do you have the part #? I was also thinking about getting the Hedman's without AIR. Has anybody used these, and if so, what kind of modification of the brackets for A/C and power steering needs to be done? I don't suppose they come with spacers and longer bolts like the Edelbrocks do.

I have the Hedman 1 5/8" shorties. Installation took me an hour but considering I have no A/C, heat, or computer/emissions stuff. Passenger side was the easiest for me, only had to take off the starter and it dropped right in. The driver's side I had to bend brake lines and remove the steering shaft. I honestly couldnt imagine installing headers with A/C and stuff installed.

The headers are nice but the y-pipe is only 2 1/2". They only cost $100 for the headers, 90-something for the Y-pipe though.
