Edelbrock 86-90 headers, fit on my '85?
I EMAILED THIS MESSAGE TO EDELBROCK:
My friend has a set of Tubular 50 State legal headers that he had running on his '89 IROC-Z 5.7L..... he wants to sell them to me to put on my '85 IROC-Z 5.0L
Will they fit? The only difference between the 85 listed and the 86-90 is:
IROC & Formula 85 5.0/5.7L T.P.I. , 4-bolt cat.
#6873
IROC, Z-28, Formula 86-90 5.0/5.7L T.P.I. , 3" inlet slip-on single cat.
#6872*
My question is will it fit?
Would really appriciate the info! Thanks
-Paul
MY REPLY:
The only difference in the two as far as the headers is the right hand side is different.
So I am not sure how it will fit on your year model as we have not done the test fitting.
Anyone know for sure? I don't wanna be half manifold, half header....

Yeah, you should be just fine. The y-pipe is 3" though, so make sure you have a 3" cat before you go to put them on.

I have a 3" Cat, I know the the headers came with a y-pipe new, but I'm getting them used, so I am under the impression they won't bolt to my existing y-pipe.

If he gives you just the headers, you will need to get a Y-pipe. The factory Y-pipe will only work for manifolds. And you will need to figure something out with the cat, as stated above, as the cat has a four bolt flange and the Y-pipe for that kit is a slip fit style Y-pipe. You might be able to use some of the stock Y-pipe to weld up some kind of an adapter for the header Y-pipe so the stock four bolt flange cat will work. Otherwise you will need to get a slip fit cat with a four bolt flange for the mounting of the intermediate pipe to use that header kit's Y-pipe and retain the stock mounting for the intermediate pipe (I hope that is understandable to ya)....
There is a possibility that you could get just the headers off you friend and order the correct Y-pipe for your style cat and it will all work out..... But that is only if edelbrock makes one that will work out like that....
Kind of a hassle, but you might be able to make this all work out for a fairly low price....
Hope that helps,
Matt
