Is there any tricks to passing??

Someone told me they had an old Mavrick here in Arizona that had nitrous and ran 12sec 1/4 mile and he said he got it to pass emmisions by putting a 1/8 tank of gas and a whole lot of alcohol. I don't see how that passed, but maybe. I have an '86 Camaro with a 350, no computer, no cat, just straight crate motor, headers, 3in exhaust and high flow muffler, holley carb and edlebrock intake. Is there ANY way to get that to pass? It's registered in another state that doesn't require emmisions testing, so I'm not really worried about it, but I would like it registered in az.

I've been told the same, so I tried it out, it did lower my readings, but I still didn't pass, that's when I had no cat. I brought it up on the TECH board a long time ago and a lot of people disagreed, but oh well.
Also, if you run your car for about 20 mins prior it helps to clean the engine out a little of pollutants.

Make sure your motor is hot, spark plugs are fairly new, and change your oil. That helps. I have also seen somewhere about the timing. Not sure if it helps.

I tried the alcohol trick too. No good for me - didn't work. The only way I could make it pass was to reprogram the chip to force open loop and run the car lean.

Put high capacity CAT back on to pass. That will help drastically, then just take it back off.

What the heck is a high capacity cat-back, and why take it off?

Clarification: Put a high-capacity catalytic converter back on the vehicle to pass emissions. He stated above that he currently has his catalytic converter (CAT) off of the car.

Depending on the vehicle, there are different applications of catalytic converters.

I had a problem once passing with one of my cars, I took it to a shop and he worked on it and took it back and had it tested and this time it passed. A few days later a had the hood open and I could hear a hissing sound, I found how the guy got the car to pass, he just pulled off a vacuum line which put more air in and leaned out the mixture.

what i did was run the car in my driveway for about 15 minutes idling, then i took it on the highway....on the onramp i slowed down to like 10mph then floored it until i reached like 10mph above the speedlimit.....then i slowed down to about 20 then accelorated again to 10 above.....all the accelorating pushed the bad fumes/chemicals out.....passed w/ flying colors.....even tho my car stalls every now and then......lol

Like Mark said run the car until it gets to operating temperature. The engine gives off more pollutants when it is cold.

you can borrow my exhaust for emissions

i live in mesa, right down the road from you probly..US60 and Gilbert road...i just found a 3" exhaust setup at one of the boneyards ($18 for ypipe, straight pipe replacing single cat location, and intermediate pipe). when i get the rest of the system (over axle, and muffler) i will be keeping this original exhaust for emissions purposes...you can borrow to run through emissions, if you like. i believe its an old SLP setup..although i have not seen anything like it after surfing the different camaro sites for the last week since i got the car. if interested, let me know...and btw...some peeps from the camaroz28.com board are going to a local dyno shop on May 11..50 bucks for the dyno and lunch, plus meet some other local camaro enthusiasts!!!

My dad has a 78 El Camino(350 w/ true duals, headers and no cats) and a 79 Trans Am(403 BB with true duals, no cats, and headers)...He takes his buddy a Mountain Dew and a $10 and it passes everytime.

Plus, his fee to get it inspected is only $6 LOL.
