Blueing compound
I did a search but couldnt find what I was looking for really and I dont know if this is the best place to post this. Does anyone know where to get blueing compound? I believe that is what it was called. I remember the stuff from metal shop in school, used on metal so you can mark on it with a pin or something, more easily identified than just using a pencil and more noticeable than just scribing a line. Smelled like it had a lot of alcohol or something in it so it would dry fast. I think it was also called dykem blue or something like that. I have no idea where to find it for my own personal use.

It goes by different names, machinists dye, marking dye, layout blueing, or whatever you want to call it on any given day. Your local industrial supplier should have it.

Dykem is the brand name of the stuff. You can get it at any industrial supply store.I think napa sells it to but im not sure.It also comes in red to.The only difference between the 2 is the red is oil resistant.Oh yeah you clean it off with denatured alcohol.Rubbing alcohol works to but not as good.

fuel works too, along with parts cleaner fluid and such other cleaners. as you all said any machine shop, or industrial supply store sells it, paint works well too. when we run out of it at work, we get white spray paint, and that even seals the steel and keeps it from rusting. comes off easily with any kind of mineral spirits being soaked for about 5 minutes.
