UPDATE: the sucker runs!-

LINK!

7.65 at 96 in the 1/8th first pass!

-------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been a while since I posted here. My IROC runs great and I beat the sh out of it on a regular basis.

I'm working on a new project, it has nothing to do with thirdgens but it's something all motorheads will either really like or really hate. What I'm building now is a 1000 horsepower all wheel drive multi-fuel twin engine hybrid vehicle. It's street legal and it gets 20 mpg at 85 mph with the A/C on.

Anyone want to see some pictures?

Sure why not, as long as we don't get to far off topic, you could say it is ideas for others doing thirdgen projects!!

It's a 2000 Dodge van. Here's the rear engine setup. It's a Rolls Royce Nimbus gas turbine from a helicopter. 800 horsepower.

It has a 9 inch ford rear. I still need to put the drive shafts and the drop box in.

Ahh, glad to see you are back! I was beginning to worry you'd dissapeared.

Once again, you are doing the amazing. Please tell us that it's done on no budget with all salvaged parts.

i think ot do this on a thirdgen you would have to severly modify the rear hatch area

so uhhh... won't that be a bit noisy? what with a turbine engine spinning behind the drivers head and all?

Well, I actually have a little budget on this one. There will be a firewall behind the drivers seat. I almost did this to my thirdgen but it just didn't fit

Man, I was just worried you done it and not told your wife, who would come out of the store with a bunch of plants and some odds and ends and open the hatch to discover no passenger room at all!

Dude, thats insane. Insane in a good way. I'm sure if there's not a law about turbine powered minivans, you will set it in there. You deffinitely have to get some pictures when its fully complete and and maybe a video or two of it driving.

sure did Eric. Sold it on Ebay a while back for $3000. That kart was the slowest, cheapest, most dangerous POS I ever took to the dragstrip. It was also the most fun

aaaahhahahahahaha!
That's hilarious! Boy, i'd love to be the guy setting you up with a life insurance plan hahaha...

wait, how do you get 20mpg at 85mph with it?
what's the turbine burn for fuel?
How is the turbine setup? I mean does it simply propel the vehicle forward with thrust (intaking air from...?) or does it somehow connect to the driveline, ie, that ford 9"?

and the dodge motor drives the front wheels? If both are trying to turn the wheels at a different speed doesn't that effect something?

20mpg would be from the Dodge eng., I'm sure. As far as the heli engine, instead of spinning a rotor head, could be used to turn the axle. There are two kinds of turbine engines, one creates thrust from the rear. The other to a shaft. What I want to know is how he's pulling the power out of the BOTTOM of the turbine? (rotor head on heli is driven out the top) And do you have some kind of trans set up to disengage the Dodge motor?

My guess is that the front engine will be "turned off" while the turbine is engaged driving the rear end. Mainly this is just for kicks and grins and dragstrip passes. Though it would be fun to have a remote to open the tailgate, and fire the turbine while someone was tailgating.

Turned off or not, the trans would be creating drag. There would have to be a way to "disconnect" the wheels from engine, like towing a rwd car from the front-driveshaft has to be removed for it to be done safely.

How are you going to get enough air intake to make that thing work? Are going to put a intake tunnel on it? And where are you going to mount the fuel cell? Sorry for so many questions but was just really currious. Do you think you will have any intake reversion causing a stall with that set up? THANKS.

This is certainly an interesting project, and while it does demonstrate a lot of fabrication and integration skills and planning, I gotta ask....

Isn't that a lot of work for only 800 SHP? Quite honestly, you could easily get more power from a more compact package by simply adding a blower to a big-cube V-8. I see 3,000HP engines at the strip so often it's almost enough to put me to sleep. You can get 700+ from a crate engine with no blower. Your big advantage is going to be the RPM potential. The big disadvantage is going to be stuffing a sheet metal box through the air at 200 MPH - With intake holes in it.

That said, it's going to be one unique vehicle (if you don't count all the other turboshaft conversions out there). Carry on.

Things could get weird at high speeds with not much weight on the front end. I guess, unless there are air intakes I don't see, be sure to roll down a window or two prior to lighting that biotch, I imagine it will move a lot of air from inside the van to the out side of the van.

Also, once running, I would like to see some video of this thing in traffic burning the paint off the hood of the car(s) behind you, preferably high end yuppie driven BMWs and the like. Then, if possible, audio tape of said schumks trying to explain to their insurance rep exactly what happened. But, I'd settle for just video!

Keep on truckin'

That's seriously the neatest thing i've seen in a long time. I wonder what the drag coefficient is on one of those minivans. With proper gearing/tires/etc. What would it do like 220 w/o aero mods!?

edit- assuming it didn't endo and explode in a ball of flame. what's your goal with this ? does your neighbor own a prius or something?

gas turbine technology is way better than a sbc. the turbine has only 1 piece turning, so less things go wrong and little maintenance is required. and rolls royce is an excellent manufacturer (ive got T-shirts )

on a helecopter, the turbine is attached to a gearbox and the shaft is directed upwards to run the blades.

it looks like an awesome project but im wondering about fuel consumption because gas turbine isnt a fuel efficent setup, so does your turbine charge a generator? or what?...dont dissappear on us again plz/

As an aircraft (helicopter) mechanic I will chime in. That black tube hanging on the right side looks to be a starter generator. It is very similiar to the starter on the cars, it will turn the power turbine so fuel can be lit in the can. As the fuel is lit the P.T. wheel keeps the starters' splines moving. INside the starter generator there is a commutator that rubs against tiny brushes that produces DC power. Normally around 24-28VDC.

Aircraft engines produce insane amounts of heat, anywhere to upwards of 200*c just from radiating. I hope you have a plan to not roast yourself :P

You plan on using JETa Fuel? You could actually just use kerosine with good results since Jet fuel is just kerosine.

Now that I think about it, I am not really liking this idea, this is very unsafe. I hope you have one hell of a fire suppression system lined up. Exhaust ventilation system, emergency fuel flow cut off, and engine power cut off switch. There are reason why aircraft have all of those safety precautions. The exhaust that comes out can be 1200* F easy. Especially if you do not have a fuel management unit for this particular engine.

I would like to see your plans for this, just because I worry for your safety maybe I could help.

by the time you are done you will have one of the first minivans with a full roll-cage. I just want to say i bet you cant do it. That always makes me try harder. good luck.

Just finished the firewall/rollbar. I still need to make the access cover for the transfer case and cut out some lexan for the window. This will be so nice, it's been so noisy inside since I ripped the rear interior out, I hope this will make it quiet enough for me to be able to talk on the phone again.

Just finished the firewall/rollbar. I still need to make the access cover for the transfer case and cut out some lexan for the window. This will be so nice, it's been so noisy inside since I ripped the rear interior out, I hope this will make it quiet enough for me to be able to talk on the phone again.
