Unexplained Wet Carpet

Hey All,

Qucik question, I got a 88 irocz that has been sitting at home undriven most of the time till I make time to fix her up. I've noticed that the rear floor carpet is wet and do not have any windows open. Can this be due to mosture outside and how fast will it take for the floor board to rust out? How would I go about drying it take a blow dryer out there or just drive the car around? Last thing i need is the rear floor board to rust away and fall apart. Has anyone else come along with this problem??

Got t-tops? They are notorious for leaking, and thats what happens when they leak at the back.

do you have t-tops?

if so they are notorious for leaking.
the hatch could be leaking too.

On my camaro, the sealer in the rear carpet area where the passenger seat bottom disentigraded away and it allowed water in. Other than be a huge pain in getting the water and smell out, the welding and finishing was not to bad.

I have almost the same problem...Except not on the rear floor. The floor on the front passenger side is almost always wet. The floor is solid so its not coming through the floor.

this may be a weird request, but smell your floor. Does it smell sweet? if so, that's your heater core leaking. An alternate leak could be water down through your heater box.

Whatever the source, get it dry before it ventilates itself through the bottom. If you suspect it's from a side or rear glass seal, consider tarping the top or taping the seams until you can address the problem.

As mentioned its probably your t tops. The 88 I had, thats where it leaked at all the time. When the hatch leaks, is it normally the weatherstripping around the trunk or something else. Mine leaks in the hatch and it stinks.

Check your inner wheel wells. I had this same problem a few weeks back and had to remove the entire carpet to find out why it was soaking wet. Couldn't find any holes anywhere. (I had my floor pans fixed last year)

I only found out yesterday actually, what the problem was after I came home and saw that my floors were soaked again. There was a big "pool" of water in the right side passenger floor area which would spill out onto the floor boards every time I hit the breaks. It was obvious at that point where the water was coming from. I checked the inner wheel well and sure enough, there was a huge area where the sheet-metal had rusted through and all the water coming off the tire when driving around would basically fly right into the car.

I couldn't spot the problem originally at first because whenever the temperature outside would drop below zero, the snow/slush that would pile up on the inner wheel well would freeze up and literally form a "barrier" over the hole, not allowing anything in. As soon as the temperature would drop, the snow would melt (into the car) and allow water/slush coming off the tires to go right in.
Weird part is, my left side fender well is perfect

I'm not sure if that's your problem, but it wouldn't hurt to check your fender wells to see if there's any rust/holes on them. It's pretty common on these cars....

my well area is always damp , it used to be soaked but i went from a 89 deck lid to a 91's deck lid (sob !!) looks ugly as hell but it stoped it from getting soaked it was the only thing that had rot on my car , i had my whole back hatch carpet and panels off to try and find why it stays damp and still cant find it

I have the same problem, till I can get around to fix, I purchased a car cover at Walmart. When they call for rain, I put on cover. I have a couple of cars to drive so I only drive when it dry. But when owning a 20+ year old car you always have to have a back up to drive.

Re: Unexplained Wet Carpet

I have an 85 2.8 liter and had the passenger side soaking, sure enuff it was the heater core. But 6 years later again- this time it was the friggin antenna. a small area near the antenna was rusted, apparently water was comin right in... check behind your kick panels
