6x9 mounting mods

Just installed these on my bird yesterday. The speakers sound AMAZING but they are pointed towards eachother and cancel alot of the sound out, so for the driver (primary listener) it kinda sucks. As well, i want to put them under the factory speaker covers. Has anyone modified their brackets to face the speakers slightly forward, and to push them in a bit more? The tweeters on these, wont let me put the covers on, they stick out about 1/2 an inch too far.

I have spare brackets,a nd was just gonna start hitting them with a hammer, till i got what i wanted, but if theres a better way, im all ears.

Well, as far as the tweeters sticking out to far, I cut out the center of the covers and added the grill to it.

There's a link in case you can't see the pic.

Projecting the 6x9s forward more would be a great idea. I never thought of it, but I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard if you pull those side panels off. Obviously it will take some work, maybe cutting and welding, but I think you would end up needing to modify panels in order to get everything to fit nicely.

Agreed, your setup is nice. BUt the reason i wanna put the factory covers on, is to HIDE the speakers. If i cut it up, id put the sony xplod covers on, cut up just the cardboard part of the cover, and then install. So there would be a little buldge in the cover. However twisting them in place, to project forward, would kill two birds with one stone. But its one hell of a big stone (pardon my analogy)

hhmm, what if you put spacers (or stacked washers) in the rear-pointing 2 screws, a couple of cm's, maybe .5in?....but I don't know how that would affect the sound....I have the same Xplod speakers, for the front and back!

Scribbles, if u still wanna post pix, thats cool, but i feel kind stupid, i figured out wat the prob was. (human error). The angle i was putting the covers on from, the cardboard part on the inside was getting caught on the tweeters, so the metal guides werent popping into the sail panel correctly. So the bottoms slid in, but the top wouldnt. I was a little too quick to say that it wasnt working, all is well now, but i have the tiniest bulge, only noticeable if you look from the side and really really close. Thanks for the help regardless.

That is how mine are, I never noticed the bulge till you said they wouldn’t fit, I took the pictures but I cant find the USB cable to download the pics on to the comp. Hence the slow response.

Well, I had some free time today so I decided to do what I said on my above post... I had a couple of platic clips, a little bit longer than 1/4in. I put them on the rear facing screws. I'll let you know if that made any sound difference next time I blast the tunes...

Changing the angle is a good idea, I never thought of it. Are any of you guys cursed with the brackets rattling like crazy when the bass hits? I have the ERS set up and the rattle drives me nuts.

Ok update, i took a regular "nut" was a 1/4in type, maybe 10-12 mm, and put it behind the rear screws of the speakers. A couple of things i noticed. GLUE the nut on the speaker, before trying to put the screws in. You will also need longer screws, regular sheet metal screws work great. I only used 1 nut behind each screw, which changed the angle maybe 5-10 degrees. But it looked like you could get away with 2 maybe 3 nuts. However, the more nuts to you use, the harder it is to screw in the screw, because its no longer going in straight.

Secondly, BlueSmoke, yes i DO have a rattle, but it just started yesterday AFTER i put my dashpad and speaker covers on. It didnt happen before when the speakers were bare. Oh well, ill have to deal with it i guess.

But i would have to say, that even that little 5-10 degree angle made a difference, AS WELL AS the covers being on. The dash speakers sound louder and clearer now that the dash pad is on, its almost as if the sound gets directed, and my rear speakers a slightly louder and more defined with the angle change. With a couple more nuts/degrees and bigger angle, i think it will make a BIG difference.

If you want to get rid of the rattle buy a roll of the foam tape used for weather stripping, and line the outside edge of the speaker, kills the rattle and helps with sound clarity. Helps isolate the speaker.

Good stuff. I assume it would seal like a sub. My rattle however is coming from the mounting plate to body attachment. They are pop riveted if I remember right. Has anyone modified the plate itself?

I had a set of Kicker Impulse 6x9's that the tweeters swiveled so you could direct the sound. It's been a few years back I ran them in the back dash of a 79 Z28 and worked great. Not sure if they are still produced, or even the same model though. Great thumps from small speakers though.

I do but I packed the cable to download the picks off my camera, so I will just explain. I bought the weather striping they use for mounting caper shells to trucks, it is about 1" wide, and 1/4" thick hi density foam with sticky on the back. It is like 6$ for a 25' roll from home depot. I stuck it all around the grill opening, and anywhere I could fins that a plastic panel hit the body, or the dash would contact the body exec. But primarily around the speaker opening before I mount the speaker. Then I installed the speaker compressing the speaker into the foam isolating it from the metal of the body. And I went around the car under the plastic molding isolating it from the body or anything else that may squeak or rattle. It makes the car very quiet and is really cheap. Hope that helps.

Re: 6x9 mounting mods

Yea that makes perfect sense, its what i was thinking u meant, but the way u said it the first time, i didnt really get it. MY vibration went away after i put all the bolts in, its kinda still there but not enough to bother me.
