got a question for you guys with fiberglass hoods. for a few years now ive just been using a "stick" of wood to hold up the hood when i work on it and a couple of shorter pieces that i made to hold the hood when showing the car that are removable and slide over the hood pins and up through the holes in the hood. has anyone here made a permanent prop rod that is attached to the car and hinged so that it folds up and under the hood when closed? im loosing to do something like that and am looking for a place to start so if anyone has any ideas or pics it would be greatly appreciated

 

I use the factory hood shocks to hold my hood up.

If you want a hood prop, go pull one from something like an S10.

 

expandable curtain rods work well too, i do believe auto zone or advance sells an actual hood prob that telescopes down to like 18" long or so, which can easisly be stored insode the car anywhere.

I plan on taking factory hood shocks and drilling holes through them. Then put a pin through the hole that was drilled in the shock to hold up the shock. I think its flrtin1's car has this done. I just seen a thread on camaroz28.com about it.

 

I actually have one "good" shock and another "useless" shock I got from the junkyard. The good shock is strong enough to hold the hood up while the second is for stability and asthetics...

 

I use the stock hood shocks (on a steel hood) and have a piece if steel tube about 6" lg (cut to suit) that I slide down from over the larger part of the body to lock the shock extended. Electrical conduit tubing is the perfect size. For a fiberglass hood, do the same, but drill in to the shock body to release the gas.

 

my biggest concern here is, with the lightweight hood, im afraid that a good gust of wind could rip it of when its up and i dont want that. right now my "show" rods are pinned, at the bottom through the hood pins and where they go through the hood i also pin them to help keep things together. im trying to make something that will mount to the bumper support or somewhere near there and attach positively to where the factory hood latch is. if i fu=igure something out i will post pics
