Anyone built their own fuel tank? I think I can handle the fab on the tank itself, but I'm wondering how to make the filler and the hole where the fuel sender installs. Does anyone sell these parts as a weld-in or something?
I think I'd rather run an inline pump for ease of changing it, with a skid plate or something to keep it safe.
I'm looking at a carb to F.I setup as well, so going from mechanical pump to electric.
Ideas?

If your capable of making a gas tank why can't you make the fuel filler neck and fuel tank sender mounting flange?
I have made quite a few S/S gas tanks and the fuel filler neck is just a peice of tubing welded into the tank. Go get a small peice of S/S tubing, fuel filler hiose (to match the tubing size), and cut your filler neck off your original gas tank and use the factory one.
The fuel tank sender has lots of options. Get a universal GM sender and build your own plate or cut out your original one and weld it in using the correct rod for steel to stainless.
Should not be that hard.

I'm not concerned about the neck itself (except that I don't have a tube bender, but I could mock something and take some tubing to a shop, no biggy). I'm concerned about the filler lip itself, where the little flap hinges to close over the filler hose and the gas cap screws in. Not sure how to fab that, or if I even have the tools.Originally Posted by Comp788

I guess I just wasn't thinking aftermarket sender. I was wondering if there was a way to fabricate the traditional stock style screw in sender (the kind with the lock ring), or if you guys were doing something different?Originally Posted by Comp788

Just 'cuz I can fabricate, doesn't mean I have a knowledge of all my options.

I don't think you need the little flaper in the end of the fill tube, my truck don't have one and don't make a difference other then looks.

Guess I gave you the wrong impression. I know that not everyone has experiance in options! Sorry to come across that way.
For the filler neck. Cut off and use the original one. It will save you a lot of time and work. There is nothing wrong with a steel filler neck attached to a S/S gas tank. I usually use the OEM filler neck even when something is welded to the tank. That is why I was saying to use the small peice of tubing and a couple of hose clamps. Just like they do in a first gen Camaro. If not sure look online at some of the part houses on what they offer.
When I have built a S/S gas tank and wanted to use the locking ring style. There are two options. Cut out and use the original one and weld it into the S/S gas tank or have one machined up. A shop can probably make one for around $100.00 to $125.00. Most people do not want to have the invested in such a small part of the gas tank. You might be able to find out what companies make S/S gas tanks and see if they will sell you the parts.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask or send me a PM.
