License Plates

Gonna have this problem in the spring. Its my first firebird, i dont know where to put the front plates. Last guy drilled into the bumper, i really dont want to do that. Its an 87 formula, so it doesnt give me a whole lot of options, but im curious to see what you guys do.

Dont say, just dont put it up, cuz i have to. Ticketable offense.

Any comments, theories, and ideas appreciated.

What's wrong with the stock location? Center of the front clip right? In the recess for the license plate?

Wheres the stock location? I guess my nose has been modified. Maybe something was there that isnt now. Ill post a pic, and ill call the MTO (ministry of transportation ontario), and ask them to clarify what the requirements for front plates are. A freind of my dad's who is a mechanic, and has ties with the ministry told me that a plate in the windshield could yield a ticket (to his best knowledge anyway), so ill try to confirm that.

Wheres the stock location? As for the "risk it", hmmm, a brown teenage male, in a black 2 door v8 car, that smokes the tires at the slightest tap???? And possibly soon to have something sticking up out of the hood. I dont think so

i took a pice of aluminum and bent it about 90. i then mounted the plate on it and bolted it to the under side of the nose/airdam. there are 2 bolts that will line right up. it will let you line it all up with the center of the nose and the plate will not touch the nose and sit much lower on the car. i think it looks better that way also. i did both of my car that way

Prolly wont heklp you much but in nevada I always have my plates on front one goes in the window though. I usually can get away with it. Although if I drove like a man named **** with a lead foot I would probably get popped for it. BTW Here is the example of what I have to deal with to give you an idea of my area.

Most vehicles require two plates at all times, except motorcycles and trailers, which require only a rear plate. You must display both plates if the vehicle is designed for a front plate or if the manufacturer offers an add-on bracket or frame.
Front plates are optional only if 1) the vehicle was not designed for a front plate and 2) the manufacturer did not provide an add-on bracket or other means of displaying the front plate.
(NRS 482.275 - 2005 Nevada Legislature Senate Bill 251)
DMV will issue two plates for all vehicles (except motorcycles and trailers). If the second plate is not displayed, it is the owner's responsibility to store the second plate and surrender or return both plates to the department at the appropriate time.
License plates must at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle so as to prevent the plate from swinging and at a height not less than 12 inches from the ground, measuring from the bottom of such plate, in a place and position to be clearly visible. It must be maintained free from foreign materials and in a condition to be clearly legible. (NRS 482.275)
License plate specifications call for plates to be readable from a distance of 100 feet during daylight. At night, plates must be readable from 110 feet and visible from 1,500 feet when lit by standard headlights. (NRS 482.270)
Plate frames or covers are not prohibited as long as the above requirements are met.

No that doesnt help much. Im trying to find someone who will answer my question. The phone required me to wait a million hours, so i went to the MTO (ministry) and asked, how the front license plate system works?
ANS: Well you have to put it up, the only way you wouldnt have to, is if your car is quebec plated (which it isnt).

Ok, well my car doesnt have any brackets or allocation for a plate, what do i do then?
ANS: Find a way to put it up.

Ok, what if i put it in the windshield?
ANS: Nope you cant do that, maybe for a little while, but youre not supposed to.

Ok, well what are the standards for putting it up?
ANS: I dunno.

Well who would know?
ANS: I dunno, canadian tire?

Candian tire? Canadian tire doesnt make the rules, who makes the rules? and who can i talk to about this?
ANS: I dunno.

At this point, i got pissed off and left. Will update when i find aphone number, or someone who can help me answer that question.

If you guys have any suggestions on who i can call, im all ears! Thanks.

hahahaa! That sounds so familiar! My buddy had that problem with his supercoupe. I'll recommend the same thing:

Put it up in your window in front of your passenger seat. When/if you ever get pulled over for it, tell the cop your car doesn't have provisions for a front plate, and so-and-so (use that dipsticks name here) at the ministry of transportation didn't have a clue. What would YOU suggest officer? He'll give you a warning, i'm pretty sure they have to give you a warning the first time, then he'll tell you exactly how you can fix it. If your car is in decent shape I don't think he'll tell you to drill holes in the front clip. You can tell him you don't want to cut/drill into recent body work, especially if you ever move to where a front plate isn't needed, and that front clip isn't made anymore for your *classic* car. He'll either tell you that
A) Drill into the car like everyone else has to do
B) Get some sort of permit allowing you to negate the need for a front plate due to circumstances. It's a long shot, but maybe...

Highway tracffic act states that the plate must be mounted on the forward most part of the car. bottom line is what bolts you use or what bracket you use... they dont give a flying... cop are the same way as long as its there and safe

one car i had i drove it with front plate tied on with wire for over 3 years.

Yea i realize they dont care how its done, was just curious what the standards are. Ok so front most part eh? I guess i will use your solution trigger, it seems to look the nicest and works the best, cant argue with that. Nice and cheap too.

I suppose that works too, but again you are bolting it to the body. Which i why i like trigger's sol'n so much. Its where its supposed to be, but doesnt harm the body.

I was hoping i could find a loop hole in the standards, but "forward most part of the vehicle" doesnt leave much to the imagination.

Something like trigger's but go an extra step. I'm working on the idea to make one that retracts underneath of the car with the flip of a switch. Trigger's is pretty sweet but I'd be worried about someone walking right in front of the car, catching their pantleg on the license plate then bending the plate all up. Plus, a retractable license plate would be cool. Something like what they did with the camaro 007 license plate mod using a window motor.

Go to AutoZone, spend $3 for the license plate bolt kit thing, and put the nuts into the air damn under the front of the car, attatch plate, bend bottom of plate around the bottom of the air dam.

Thats how mine is on on the Camaro, you can see it from the front of the car, if you're a few feet away.

well they said you can put it in the windshield "for a little while"... how do they know when you put it there? If you get pulled over just tell the officer that you just put it there "for a little while"

Call the RMV, tell them your plate was damaged in a minor front end collision. They'll issue a permit for about a year that allows you to drive without a front plate while they issue you a new plate and while your front end is "repaired". Atleast that's what MA does.

I have a buddy that did the same thing, as trigger GTA did, on his TTA. Wish I had known about it BEFORE I put my front plate on. Two strips of metal, bent at 90 degrees, and using 2 factory bolts underneath.

Mine was in the windshield when I bought the car, but it only took 3 weeks to get warned by a officer, that wasn't gonna cut it.

My nose still had 4 original holes, plugged with some little inserts. I was able to put my mounting screws into 2 of them (not having to put new holes in the nose), but for the other 2, I had no choice.

If you don't want to make your own, then get a 4th gen Camaro bracket from SLP. You can mount it under the front bumper so there won't be any visible holes later.

i have the same problem here in illinois mine had a bracket kit from factory but it was all broken up or bent up so badly it wasnt useable anymore

i looked under the nose and dont see how i could mount a piece of metal like mentioned above, maybe the 82 83 84 birds are different than the 85 up ones but it would take several bends to do such a thing with a piece of metal under my 82 t/a

too complicated

i cant find a plate holder around here none of these cars are in yards and i cant find anywhere that sells any and i dont really want to have it attached to my bumper cover anymore anyways

so i guess im gonna run around with a plate in my dash

screw it.

i dont care really
