Loaded question. Are you as intelligent as I am? Then it's not hard. Do you have a sub-40 IQ? Then it's impossible.

Re: how hard is fiberglassing?

Where are you trying to put it b/c I was thinking of in the console right behind the window switches. By just doing the old speaker port with a abs pastic bottom. Would take under 8minutes totle start to finnish.

Re: how hard is fiberglassing?

it's not too hard, sanding it down is what will kill you.
you will need to mock up the cup holder from cardboard or something of the type and the first layer is hardest to put on, the next ones are easy.

Re: how hard is fiberglassing?

Yeah, it's quite easy.

Just work quickly, so the resin doesn't harden while you're working (or start curing - because then it is a BITCH to get the rest of the 'glass down). Oh, and don't inhale the fumes (especially the catalyst by itself - we use meek at school, and damn, it's deadly).

wellheres the drawing idea for the cupholder
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/fabr...iberglass.html
and yes i do have an iq above -40, but i am also 21, and the only fiberglass ive ever repaired was on surfboards lol, thats a lot easier than fabbing something 3D and self standing and yeah i know if its cheap enough just buy it....but i also have a lot of free time and i wouldnt mind making this lol

Re: how hard is fiberglassing?

I answered the question, didn't I UncleTom?

A good idea is to use a "lost foam plug", which is where you use urethane foam, or the green stuff found at arts and crafts stores, to carve the shape that you are going for. Then, spray it with latex paint, i.e. house paint, and let that dry. You do this so the resin wont melt the foam plug down when you go to lay up the glass.

Lay down some resin (polyurethane resin is preferred many times over than polyester resin) and then lay down pre-cut 1"X?" strips of fiberglass cloth. Use a GOOD brush to "dab" the cloth into the resin. Lay down another thin coat of resin to saturate the cloth, then wait for it all to get sticky. Repeat until you get as many layers as desired (5-8 typically).

EDIT: Reading the post below made me realize I forgot one important step.

When the glass cures, use acetone/thinner to dissolve the foam and paint out, then you are left with just the glass piece.

Re: how hard is fiberglassing?

Yes, foam is a much better way to create a mold than cardboard. Also, use some type of release agent (name slips me at the moment) on top of said house paint, as it will make it much easier to get the foam out - if that is what you desire.
