I’ve suddenly found that I don’t have room for a number of things in my rollaway, at least three drawers have outgrown their drawers (wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers), and wrenches are the worst offenders. I hate when they’re not in order so I don’t know if they’re all there, and I just have to figure out something better to organize them. I pretty much have 2 of everything, one metric and one sae, 12/13 each of normal box/open end wrenches, 7 or 8 each of swivel end ratcheting wrenches, an assortment of wrenches for specific applications (4 or 5 snap on long reach wrenches, a few that were cut in half or otherwise modified to get into tight spaces, flair wrenches…).

So what do you guys use/like for organizing wrenches?

 

Sears has a descent organizer that holds wrenches at a bit of an angle so they stack up. The organizer had a bit of a handle at the top and carries reasonably well. Like all of this stuff, it is cheaply made, but it has worked descently for me.

Since you have some odd wrenches or bits of wrenches you might be better off with a tray or building something with a magnet at the top and dividers to keep the wrenches separated.

 

Harbor Freight had some plastic wrench trays that I got a couple years ago that work real well in a fairly stationary box. They don't lock the wrenches in so you can't just grab the whole rack and take it with you. As for the little 7/16 and under sets I just used a divided section in my ratchet drawer. I need to go get a few more to replace some modified ones that came with differant wrench sets. Another problem with these is it isn't the most efficient use of drawer space, but for the money I dropped on some of this stuff I like it accessable and a quick once over shows if anything is missing after a project. I hate deep drawers in tool chests, only one layer per drawer. Same with sockets, every single socket has a home. I use the cheapo socket racks from the tool tent sales and cut them to the length I want.

 

I use the foam dividers with cutouts for wrenches. I bought them at sears. you use 2 side by side and that way you are not limited to the sizes on the racks. they hold 21 wrenches a lengh if you have enough room.

 

As boring as it sounds, I have the wrench trays that rcmgee has pictured in his first picture. Except mine are stamped steel, and I simply bolted that to the wall.
Most of the time I just grab the 1/2, 9/16", 13mm and 15mm and walk over and do the job. Rarely do I need to go back and get other sizes eh?
I tried quite hard to hang everything up on my wall above my crappy home-made wooden work bench. I try to get more work space that way. I have yet to buy one of those red rolling toolboxes

 

Huh, I’m not sure if I’m getting anywhere here.

In a perfect world I’m trying to pack about 2x as many wrenches as rjmcgee has in one drawer, maybe I’m just being unrealistic and need to come up with some way to break them up. I just realized that my totals were a bit underestimated since I have things like 2 18mm wrenches since all the suspension fasteners on our cars have 18mm heads and at some point I needed an 18mm wrench on both sides…

You know, it’s funny, it seems like some of you just have more room in your roll away drawers, even though mine is a full (top and bottom section…) craftsman ball bearing setup, but still, what I’ve been happy with WRT to wrenches was a non slip mat in the bottom of the drawer and the wrenches arranged from small to large on one side for the metric wrenches and from large to small on the other for sae. That seems to take up almost all the space in the drawer, with some of them even sitting on top of each other so they’re sitting up diagonally facing you like they are in those racks

With the foam deals, do they attach to the drawer somehow? How many wrenches in how much space do they hold?

 

I will bring my camera in with me tomarow I have a lot of room in my box though as it is a tripple bay snap-on bottom and a double bay top box.

I tried hanging the plastic wrench organizers on the sides of the rollaway, but then the wrenches always fell off when I moved it.

Huh, that might be a winner, I tried to do something like that out of wood, but it just proved to be too big a hassle to get right. I’m actually kind of curious about the dimensions on those things before I go out and get some, but if I remember right they’re cheap anyway from sears…

 

Yeh I looked around for a while till I decided on them. They are 23 1/2 inches long and hold 22 wrenches a pic. They are sold more as drawer dividers than wrench holders. they also have 2 sided tap on the back if you want to fasten them down. I didn't in case I want to change the setup latter.
