Another CAI idea

I was looking through gmhightechperformance.com and I saw the article for the Magnum TPI....Come to find out...its the big brother of my car! Its a 396 276hr AFR 195 SLP 1 3/4 dual cat. Only difference is it has the MINI ram and I have HSR. Well I was reading about the CAI they made (http://www.gmhightechperformance.com...ipe/index.html)

I dont want to pay the money they did for it so I thought about getting 4 inch piping from exhaust shop or summit, getting a bigger Cone filter, hose clamps and 4 inch hose and having at it.

SUM-640040-$18 for 4 feet of tubing 4 inch pipe
Cant find hoses but clamps are 5 bucks
KNN-RF-1015- $42 Air Filter
WLK-41367- $34 90* mandrel bend 4 inch pipe

anybody think this will be worth it or am i just out there in left field?

Only downfall would perhaps be the weight difference between plastic and steel. I say go for it and show us how it looks!

I only wished there was a way to do it without relocating the battery to the trunk!

Re: Another CAI idea

If my car wasn't MAF, I would have done this a long time ago, but right now I have my CAI exactly as they did it, but with 3in piping...

Re: Another CAI idea

It should work ok. I did mine with 3"PVC pipe in the same location as that article. the only problem I had was getting a rubber coupler that would fit the PVC pipe and the intake on the 3.1. I ended up using the stock piece that goes from the plenum's intake over to that corner. I'm still experimenting though.

4" pipe might be a little too big to fit down past the evap can though. Mine just barely squeezes in over there.

Re: Another CAI idea

you know, know that I think about it, I might just do a 4" tubing up to the CAI, doubt I'll see much of a difference, but I'm sure it couldn't hurt... I enlarged the hole pretty well...

Re: Another CAI idea

Finally!!! the weather cleared up and took me a few shots of Bacardi and half a pack of smokes and some cuts on my fingers, but its in! Doesnt look very pretty, but it works! I went for a test drive and it doesnt hit any belts and doesnt move. I only wish I wouldnt have burnt the drill motor up.....I wanted the whole bottom piece to be gone. But hey I fit that filter about 3/4 the way down it. I had to cut the 45* pipe though. For some reason, I went with one 90* pipe and one 45* pipe
If I wouldve ordered two 90*....that filter would defiantly be underneath the engine compartment. But until I wanna cut my hands up again, the 4.5" hole should do just fine. ill post pics up when I get batteries for the camera.

Or you could go this way:

With the filter under the car.

that was my initial intention, but for some odd reason I ordered one 90* pipe and one 45* pipe. I'm still smacking myself for doing that. Your setup looks ALOT cleaner than mine. Is it 3" or 4" Dyno Don?

It's 3 1/2"
I would but I'm afraid the cost might be prohibitive, not being able to mass produce them.
