Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

I was wondering if you in anyway still had or remember the specifications on how to build/mount the cup holder to the underside of the dash? I am wanting to pretty much exactly what you have done here but need to know what dimensions the mounting box should be for the cup holder.

Thanks for the help

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

I know on at least two of the screws, I used the existing holes that were there from where the dash connects to the dash pad. for the others, I had to drill a couple of small holes through the dash, and used J nuts on the back side for threads

if I can find pics of the j nuts, I'll post them

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

Ok thank you. Also, when you made the housing for the cup holder, did you just outline it on the metal to get the proper dimensions? Do you think that instead of 22 gauge steel would sheet metal or aluminum work as well?

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

I think I bent the sides up and then roughly drew the curve of the front facing. I cut it all with a cut off blade of a dremel tool, and made adjustments as I went.

Sorry I don't remember more. Maybe more will come back to me when I find the photos from the build

Ok i was thinking about doing either that or tracing the cup holder then cutting it out with a jig saw. And you said you used u bolts to connect the cup holder itself to the casing? Is that right? I just wanna get it right so the cupholder does not pop out taking a corner. Especially with a drink in it. I saw your pictures on the post and have to say great job on the cup holder. Hopefully I can get mine to turn out as good.

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

I used long bolts to hold the sliding tray to the casing. The u nuts were to secure it to the underside of the dash, but of course I took the dash pad off for that.

Post pics when you are done!

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

Ok sounds like it shouldn't be too hard to mount to the dash. I just got a new dash pad so I am gonna make sure I don't mess it up. And I am going to try and get the chocolate at the junk yard within the next few days and when I get everything done I will post pictures.

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

You won't mess up your dash pad. Just use existing holes and you'll be fine. Watch the shoe that I made the tray into. I remember I had to cit a notch into it, but I can't remember why, lol

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

I finally finished the cupholder. I used sheet metal, and instead of truck bed liner, i used rustoleum hammered black paint. The cupholder i got came out of a '92 Cavalier, and i attached to the front of the cupholder a Camaro badge I also got at the junkyard.

Nice! I guess i'll have to stop calling mine "one of a kind" and just refer to it as the "original" ultimate upholder

Good job

Ok, I am finally done uploading the pictures. I think it doesnt look too bad. May not be the 'original' but I think I did a pretty good job if I do say so myself.

looks great! love the camaro emblem, what did you use for that?

How did you seal the rounded edges of the tray the the fixed part of the cupholder?

I used quick set epoxy to attach the emblem and I used 1 1/2 inch screws to attach the cupholder to the bracket

58Mark - what brand truck bedliner did you use on that? The texture matches pretty well.

Light coats - got it. I need to use it to re-texture a piece of trim that I repaired using Plastifix.

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

58Mark -
That stuff worked great for re-texturing a part. I used it on a 1982 Trans Am radio faceplate, and it looks like new again. Thanks for the tip.
This is what I re-textured. I had to repair the broken tabs, and I got glue on the textured part and had to sand it out. I used the truck bed coating, and then sanded the texture down a little with 600 grit sandpaper. It came out great.
I then sprayed it with SEM Landau black. I am going to start a new thread on fixing the tabs on interior plastics with Plastifix, but I just wanted to thank you for the tip.

Re: the ultimate 3rd gen cupholder

After all of these years, I think something has come unwound inside the cup holder, it is at least 20 years old after all. It's rattling, and doesn't want to slide smoothly anymore

So today... look what I picked up on Ebay, a brand new one in the box! I should be good to go for another 20 years

I don't know the over hang area on a firebird, but I'm better there's more than enough room to do it on one of those too

Actually, this one looks narrow enough to put under heater vents.
