Scratch Filler

I have a cluster of scratches on my driver side window which i'd rather fill in, but i don't know of any glass scratch filler. Curious if anyone else knows? I'd love to replace the glass but i don't know how and rather not fiddle and screw up the glass with riveting it to hard it breaks...

Re: Scratch Filler

Theres not really anything you can do to 'remove' scratches from glass, like you can paint or plastic. When one uses a polish on paint or plastic, for example, that polish does not remove the scratch, it just gets into the scratch and polishes the inside of the scratch to make it match whats around it - making it appear to vanish. This works reasonably well on paint and clear plastics (think headlights) but it doesn`t work on glass very well.

Re: Scratch Filler

Thats why i'm asking about a "filler", i was debating on using a deluted epoxy, and then just keep rubbing it in the area in small patches..

I have power locks, non-power windows so i dont know the process of exchanging a driver side window on the door... unless someone has a guide?

Re: Scratch Filler

the windshield repair kits use a UV setting resin that have refractive qualities very similar to glass, so when you fill glass with it it mostly disapears, but I've never tried it on scratches or side glass.

Re: Scratch Filler

The side windows seem given to scratches. I wonder if 'fixing' them, regardless of method, would be permanent.

Thanks, what i'll do is probably get a flat rubber puddy knife and then use the "windshield repair kit epoxy" and just make a thin coat and rub it around so its not glumpy.

I had a body shop buff out/polish a windshield wiper scratch, and while the scratch can't be easily seen, it's still there. Probably a bigger scratch though than would appear on a side window.

Re: Scratch Filler

What do you do for buffing it out? I have a rotary buffer, just don't know what to use.

I've never played with the stuff outside of it's syringe, but I'm pretty sure that the stuff is pretty thin, those kits use suction cups or stick onto the windshield and then use a vacuum to pull the stuff into the crack till it sets up with UV light (the "professional" setups are basically the same with reusable mounts and they add a UV light to cure the stuff faster).

As far as polishing, it's not uncommon for body shops to polish the crud off a windshield, but i'm pretty sure that the stuff used to polish scratches out is a much harder abrasive than normal rubbing or polishing compound. I'd love to know of something easy to get your hands on that would work.

Re: Scratch Filler

I just added that to my list of automotive suppliers. With 9 vehicles, I usually end up fighting glass scratches eventually. This is a great sounding kit solution. Thanks for posting it!!! Nitro-Nicky
