Re: different ac ideas

I moved mine more towards the center of engins from stock location on my -89.

Here is the bracket, se If I can take a photo with the AC mounted.
Will also need to fix new lines for a cleaner look.

Re: different ac ideas

I'm guessing that the issue isn't mounting the compressor, but getting rid of the big box after the blower motor.

Re: different ac ideas

yea the its really all about getting rid of the giant box i was working on a 90 chevy truck with the 454 in it and under the dash i had the complete set up under there i was wondering if something like that could work cause if you moved somethings around under the passenger dash i think it would fit with a little fabrication work

Companies make underdash kits for hot rods. I've often wondered if some local pipe fitters or hvac guys could help me figure out a way to run some custom lines.

Household a/c is engineered differently than an automobile, but the system works more or less the same and still uses the same refrigeration cycle. The main difference is the amount of pressure from the compressor. A 2.5ton compressor might run a whole house, but that's about the size of a compressor in an automobile.

The main reason from what I understand is all the glass in a car, the sun heats the air much more efficiently and it takes a whole lot more effort to counteract the greenhouse effect.

But I'm getting off course.

Try looking at hotrodair.com, classicautoair.com, even speedway motors... places like that.

I hang out on a ratrod board and allot of those guys use the water box AC trick. A cooler full of water n ice, that circulates through the heater core via a small elec pump and cool air o plenty.

THough no clue where your gonna hide such a device but it is different

Re: different ac ideas

I am looking into this same thing right now. I plan on using March brackets for the compressor and getting a polished compressor. I have a lot of room under my dash because I took everything out under there. I have noticed that a lot of newer cars come with the AC box mounted under the dash. I know I am going to the junk yard this weekend, I may start tearing some dashes apart while there to measure some stock boxes to see what I can fit. I live in Orlando so I know what you mean about the heat. Having AC would make me want to drive my car much more.

check out vintage air. they have a series of a/c evaporator units called GEN II that would fit in place of the heater box under the dash. You can get them with just a/c or a/c, heat and defrost. The units are cable and vacuum operated and might work off you factory controls.

I looked at them and looked at the price. Thats why I'm trying to find a factory box I can use.

Re: different ac ideas

The big problem is no air flow, with only 2 windows you don't get and cross breeze. Gotta get T tops or a moon roof.

I'm hoping to solve this on mine this summer when I install some TA hood vents into the top sides of the car, so air can come in and go out.

I live in Ohio near the lake and a nice 70 day with a cool breeze will fell like 110 in the car with both windows down, stick your arm out and its feel nice, the air just won't come in the car.
