roll bar welding question

roll bar welding question

I am in the process of welding in a simple four point roll bar into my 92, and the rear bars that come down from the main hoop are set to be welded in on the flat hatch section immediately behind the rear seats..

now i now this section is above the gas tank, so i was a little worried about welding them in with the tank in the car.
however, i also noticed that there are spot welds in the same section so i assume that it is a little thicker sheet metal..

overall i just want to know if people have welded this area without any problems, or if the sheet metal is thicker there...

if you want to do a qualty job, fabricate some base plates, weld those on first and then weld the bars on there, no sense in welding bars to thin sheet metal without spreading the load, the bars will poke right through when you need them the most

i have base plates, and i plan on welding the bars to them, i'm wondering about welding the plates to the sheet metal of the hatch area.

The best spot is right behind the shock mounts. that's where the frame is and the strongest part of that area

okay, the roll bar is already made and the hoop is welded in, the rear bars come down right behind the rear seats, i don't want to hack it all up again, so i'm just wondering if anyone can tell me if the sheet metal there is thick enough that i shouldn't have to worry about having embers falling on to the gas tank, or if i would have remove the tank first...

When I put my down bars and plates in, I did not pull the tank but I did take my time welding the plates in to make sure the area didn't get too hot.

Remove the tank, it's not worth the risk. It's a PITA to remove the tank but it's the sure way to keep the car/house/garage safe. I've done two (8-point roll bars) - and have removed the tank both times.
