for those that wanted updates... the car got done, drove it a bunch and it's currently back in 10000 pieces undergoing a twin turbo 400ci SBC swap, and a whole lot of other changes...

Pics from when it was still a running driving car.

What did you paint your engine bay with? Also, what were the catch cans behind the nose? Coolant overflow? What was the other... finally what is the vacuum pump for? I still don't know what the purpose of those are. Thanks for any insight.

Oh and what did you end up doing for rear bump stops? Anything?

One was for coolant. The other the catch can for the vacuum pump. Vacuum pump evacuates crankcase gasses and creates crankcase vacuum, which in turn improves ring seal, which in turn makes horsepower. Engine bay was painted with duplicolor satin black engine paint. Product code is de1634 I believe.

I am building a 390 sbc with a f1 blower. Do you think all cars trying to make big power should have vacuum pumps?

yes for sure, having a vacuum pump basically takes the place of a pcv system but does a much better job, I remember the first drag car I ever had would push oil out the rear main all the time, we were doing that seal every weekend until I found out about the header collector hose trick, a vacuum pump would have been even better,

Re: 8.50 cert cage into a 86 Z28

Nice. Think I will do the header collector setup. Just got to see if it is ok for the street. All the kits I see say race only. .. why? Also running a pump sends like a good idea, but it is another thing I need to mount to my engine and I am already having issues running the standard stuff and the blower with no flex. ..

Re: 8.50 cert cage into a 86 Z28

Its because just like any pcv system, there will be a small amount of oil along with the crankcase vapors, that's why there is a catch can for the vacuum pump. Even a small a mount of oil in the exhaust will kill a catalyst in no time.

"Race only" usually means no air/smog provisions and or low ground clearance, your car is way past passing any smog tests being a 390" with an F1 I'm sure.
If I were you I would run the biggest best flowing header you can find, blower cars need to breath. As far as the vacuum pump only if your having accessive blowby. However I would suggest running some sort of free flowing vent with a catch can first.

If your running the header evac system I would also suggest welding/placing the tubes as close to the opening of your tail pipe as possible or it will just reverse and will not draw out any crankcase pressure.

Re: 8.50 cert cage into a 86 Z28

All good stuff ingram, that's why u usually see the collector setup on cars with open headers or very short collectors, the highest "vacuum" is usually found at the collector where the primaries meet, and as far as emissions, a vacuum pump will be race only also because its not set up to send the vapor back into the intake like a factory pcv

Re: 8.50 cert cage into a 86 Z28

So a catch can between the motor and exhaust port inlet right?

Think I will start a new thread to sort out the details. Thanks

Question for the OP, what does the coolant line on the left side of the motor go to?

The only thing I see on the left side of the motor is a crankcase breather line coming off the top of the valve cover and going down to a vacuum pump.

Think he meant the left side when looking at the pic, it comes off the heater hose fitting on the intake, so if he has a heater it would go to the heater core

Re: 8.50 cert cage into a 86 Z28

Thats what I figured, just curiouse. Didn't see a heater core, stock at least.

I have a mini Mojavee heater in my car now so that I can have heat and still have a smooth firewall. Just curiouse if the OP had done the same sort of thing. I have not seen anyone else on here do that.

Yup, the car has a Mohave heater, didnt like the stock heavy *** heater, or where the heater line went through the firewall so I ditched them both.

Awsome, can you show me where you mounted yours? I had a hard time finding a good place to put it? Or are there pics about this in your build thread?
