shoehorn sbc and t-56

Just wanted to see if anyone here has done this. I am taking my entire car apart and thought it might save time of I don't have to take the tranny of the motor.

Re: shoehorn sbc and t-56

Yes, I have done it, with the distributer cap on. I had to take the radiator out, and have one person under the car [on a lift] pushing the tail of the transmission down.

I'm not sure it could be don't on jackstands, the transmission has to point over 45* down

Re: shoehorn sbc and t-56

I recommend taking the distributor off, and anything on the top of the motor (carb, air cleaner, etc). But yes, it's totally possible (that's how mine went in, was motor+tranny).

Also helps if you take the fan off (if it's mechanical) and remove the radiator

Re: shoehorn sbc and t-56

Since you are taking it all apart, install the engine + trans + front subframe from below, easiest way to do it.

Re: shoehorn sbc and t-56

I will be ready to pull the motor and all in a week or so. Dizzy will be off, radiator will be out, no fans, but the car is just on jack stands. I will post some pics and you guys can give your final verdict

Done that several times. Fastest without any excess difficulty

Re: shoehorn sbc and t-56

i leave the bellhousing on and undo the 6 or 8 bolts that hold the housing to the gear box and remove it that way

Re: shoehorn sbc and t-56

I have to drain the tranny right? I think I have a vague memory of tranny fluid spilling out the tail shaft last time I talked it a lot, like to shoe it in

Got an extra slip yoke? Stuff it in the tail or drain the fluid

Just make sure you secure the slip yoke

I forgot this step first time I pulled mine and it fell out, making a big mess.

Re: shoehorn sbc and t-56

we have an extra slip yoke so we don't have a mess that's it and as long as u don't turn the tranny over it'll come out from the shifter spot

Re: shoehorn sbc and t-56

I put the rear of the car on ramps then set a skateboard or a moving dolly under the car for the tailshaft to sit on on so it doesn't scrape the floor
