Hood prop rod

Has anyone bolted a hood prop rod on their car instead of buying hood struts? It's not the priciest item(s) I need fixed but you just can't beat the stick. I am curious to the optimum length it needs to be and which vehicles will have them from the junkyards.

This is also useful in case I buy a fiberglass hood for my Camaro; I would need a new set of hood struts.

Re: Hood prop rod

I still use the struts to hold my fiberglass hood up. Sticks and props just get in the way when you're working on the engine.

Re: Hood prop rod

I also use struts on my fiberglass hood, but I went to the junkyard and got a set that wouldn't hold up a steel hood and they work perfect with no risk of cracking the fiberglass

same thing here. worn out struts work great for a 'glass hood.

Re: Hood prop rod

I'd be more worried about actually getting the hood up to put it on the rod...The stock hood is quite heavy.

Re: Hood prop rod

That's not a bad idea if you want a cool looking one. But if blown hood struts will hold up a fiberglass hood, I may keep my blown ones for when I get a fiberglass hood. But, you would get used to the stick in that one small spot.
