custom shift boot

Has anybody tried to replace the factory shifter boot by using, for instance a hurst style rubber shifter boot, in the center console to achieve more of a muscle car look?

I believe it's doable. I was able to make my own shifter boot from an automatic plate. The manual plate would be even easier, just have to find one that is the right size on the bottom for the opening.
