i like the nostril hoods and stock hoods. i would keep a cowl if it was on a cami when i bought it but i would sell an ss hood if i bought a camaro with one. UGLY. of course this is why i drive a firebird.

I think the ss and a 2" (maybe 3") both look great on a third gen. But I personally like the SS more, and hopefully someday (probably a long time) I'll get one.

I'd have to go with the SS hood. And yes- it's functional. At least it is on my bowtie. The air duct helps the engine breath better just b/c it lets more air into the engine compartent. And if you have a ram air set up like mine to go with the hood, yeah, of course it helps. Secondly, we all know how horrible the cooling is on these cars, your fan goes out for 2 min. and your temp is up to 220 or more. By letting more air in through the front, it helps keep things cool. The design of the scoop forces air through the opening with plenty pressure behind it, hence RAM air. It rams the air into the intake. Whereas the cowl hood sucks the air in through the back, after it has mixed with the hot air coming off your hood, with less pressure. Besides, the SS looks damn good.

this would be the ultimate hood if they made it for thirdgens. It's basically an enlarged ss hood, but the edges are sharper and I think it would look hella cool on a 3rd gen. I think i might have to go have one custom made. i wonder what it would cost.....prolly around $400 or so...hmmmmm.....

I agree.. but nothing taller that a 2in cowl.. and the more rounded ones the boxy ones look terrible..

The Cowl Hood make a car look too much like a drag strip car, while the SS is more low Profile and has more of a nice "street" look....IMO

GASGZLR, that is an ASCD Big Block hood. I have that one too, and can't go anywhere without people commenting on how good it looks.

Personaly, I thing the factory hoods with either the louvers (or blisters) look best on these cars.

But, if you just have to have an aftermartket hood, I really like the Japanese carbon fibre hood. Ther's some pic's floating around on these forums. Verly sleek looking and flows with the lines of these cars perfectly. Downside is, they retail for about $1500. Still, they're the best looking aftermarket hoods I've seen on these 3rd gen Camaro's.

Otherwise,

THE Jongbloed hood.:

Followed by the SS hood:

Followed by the Big Block Hood

The stock hood looks by far the best with the louvers. The SS however looks retarded. It does not belong on a third gen of any kind. The cowl looks ok. And anything other than the three look like some messed up... Looks way too busy for a hood.

The stock hood is the best solution if your intake and carb fit underneath there. If not then this thread becomes very neccesary.
Speaking of which, does anyone have a measurement of the height of your engine before you need an aftermarket hood? How much room do you need above the air filter?

i belive the cowl hood is more effective and i like the looks a little more than the ss ram air really doesnt "ram air" unless your going i believe its 180+ and a cowl hood uses Bernoulli's principle and sucks air in but thats just my $.02

Yes, the hood is still available. It's not something you see on a 3rd gen too often. Matter of fact, besides that one picture I posted above, I've never actually seen any IROC with this hood before. It's "different". I like it.

The company name is "Cervini's Auto designs." They make a bunch of differnt hoods for just about every make you can think of. The hood your looking for lists for $499. Here's a link to their website. Hope this helps.

3rd gen camaro hoods

i used a 4'' fiberglass harwood cowl induction hood...i bought the non hinged version trying to save some money. it looks great and was pritty cheap. the bad part is that it is held on with 4 pins and is a pain in the butt to take off... i have to put a blanket on my roof then call a friend to help me lift it off. i would recamend the hood for racing but not for the street. i have trouble seeing the passenger corner of the car over the hood, i have a good view of my air cleaner though.

Im lookin to get a 2" cowl hood for my camaro, im hearing good things about harwood... so is theres a spot to cut out for the aircleaner? it would be cool to get a taller one jambed in there. i dont know if anyone else has this problem but my air cleaner is pressed against a distributor wire i dont need to get shocked trying to take the aircleaner off!!

I definitely like the big block hood over the rest, its a combination of a cowl and the SS hood. I have the front of mine cut out with a screen in the cut out to let more air in and to force the hot air out the back.

I haft to say the cowl, I have the 2in from goodmark, but it measures more like 3 in, It is a genuine gm restoration part and stamped on the underside of the hood, It fit perfect, Here ae some pics, tell me what you think

Re: Best aftermarket Camaro hood: Cowl vs. SS.....

Although this may seem counter intuitive for most people, Air does not suck out the back of a cowl induction hood. If you look at an air pressure diagram of a car the places with the highest external air pressure are at the leading edge of the hood and at the start of the windshield. This makes sense if you think about it. Since there is higher pressure at these two locations, an opening at either of these locations will create the greatest "ram air " effect. The middle of your hood has relativly low pressure on it in comparison and many factory hood scoops in this location are just for show. Just thought this might help in understanding. The Bosch Automotive handbook has a good diagram to illustrate this. I am an automotive engineer and just thought this might be helpfull for some.

The goodmark is the one I was going to buy. Steel, sturdy, functional cowl, the hole is 14 in for the cleaner to stick up in, perfect fit, easy to paint.

a company (can't remember which one) used to make a factory appearing IROC hood with a 2" or 2.5" cowl... looked identical to stock except for the cowl. If I could get my hands on one of those hoods...
