I can't think of any benefit to to do it the way GM designed it. I still think they did it to "make" customers come in & spens $ on repairs. Like the heater core. "Let's not make it easy for home repairs, when possible."

I'm all for the Fuel Pump Access Door mod.
+1000 Great thread!

Maybe not, but cutting the tip of the hood off will make engine access easier--you won't even have to unlock the car to open the hood. Hope you don't live in the city......

Re: cutting out metal above fuel pump 1992

A story sort of related to all this; A guy I work with spent nearly a whole weekend during the middle of winter on removing the tank in a very rusted RX-7 to change the pump. He was really bummed out when I told him that they have a factory access hole for this. If anyone cares, I'm on the side of making the hole. You can trouble shoot stuff before having to pull the back end of the car off to see what's happening too.

Should make you at least think about safety a lil bit.

The thing about the video above is the bonehead revving the engine......he shouldn't even have a license.

About the access panel.........just chop one in like this and use some duct tape to seal it up.

Honestly how did that fire even happen? Did that cat become 'shattered' cause a exhaust fire and some how rupture a fuel line near the fuel tank? It just looks odd because its on the driver rear side and the exhaust all runs mainly on the passenger rear side.

Lmao jeez that ruined the car! It makes me wonder what these people were thinking before hand "save a few hours, or possible rip my car to shreds"

Ghetto, I watched that video several times and had a couple questions....
1. They were both smiling/laughing at the beginning, WHY?
2. Why would you have a phone camera filming this event? If he was "just clearing it out".

Just looked too hinky to me...if you know what I mean. There could have been some grass or something of that nature stuffed by the cat con to make this happen...IDK, JMO.

It was a nice car.

I'd love to know what the insurance payout was on it ....

PS , a quick shot of what ALL the best dressed third gens are wearing these days ........
Hi Bob , that video was originally posted in the southern California regional board in April 2015 and the above post was my response to it at that time . Yes I do believe that was a purposeful torching for the insurance money and the more I watched it the more I thought so . Oh , in case anyone's wondering the PS in the above quote was a picture of the fire extinguisher that all my cars have in them within fairly easy reach .

Re: cutting out metal above fuel pump 1992

I should've cut a hole in my third gen Camaro just like I did in my forth gen. The pump I put in the 94 was a bad pump (check ball would let the pressure drop out of the pump ) made it very hard to crank. Replacement of the pump was a breeze with the hole. But of course I cut the hole while the tank was dropped. Careful, sharp edges can cut fingers. There should've been an access area for the pump anyways, just like my wifes Hyundai. Covering it back up with another piece of metal and very short screws is a wise decision, incase you throw something with weight back there.
