700R4 Shifter Feels Loose/Has No Effect?
700R4 Shifter Feels Loose/Has No Effect?
If your 700R4 shifter feels loose and you cant shift into any gear besides the one you are on already, you most likely have a shifter cable problem.
The common problems are the cable disconnecting from the shifter assembly, which can be checked by removing the cover around the shifter/ashtray (1 piece).
If all seems well, look under the driver's side of the car with a flashlight at the side of the transmission. You will notice a cable that runs through a rubber boot into the shift lever. Check if the cable is disconnected.
If the cable is connected, ensure the bracket holding the cable is secure and in place. If not, replace the entire cable. If you are not in the most convienient spot, and you need to move the car, follow these instructions.
If you are alone, make sure you wedge a tire and reach for the shift lever at the side of the transmission and slide it all the way towards the front of the car (Park). Then, click it 3 times towards the back of the car (Neutral) and start it. Reach for the lever one more time and click it 1 over towards the rear of the car into Drive and move out the way. (This method not suggested, use at your own risk).
The suggested method is to have a friend with you holding the brake down while you switch the gears, if you are lucky enough to have someone with you when it happens.
