Is this right about the round shift *****??
I was wondering if its was correct that the grain of leather or something used on early round shift ***** in Z28's and IROC-Z's changed and was different the year before they switched to the square 1's?? I think it was supposed to match the steering wheel better, any1 know??

IROCZTWENTYGR8,
I am not sure if I can help you or not but it looks like the same leather or grade of leather is used on the steering wheel, shift **** and emergency brake handle. Looking at the folds on the steering wheel where it is stitched, I mean it could be a slightly better leather but not much. This car was finished on 4/04/86, so the shift **** was made early in 1986.
After I looked at that picture again I saw where I liked my graphic equalizer full strength when I used to play the radio. I was a heck of a lot younger when I listened to the ZZ-Top cassette tape in that car.

I love that early style shift console area so much more than the later 1's. I want to know because when I find this 87 I want to change the square shift **** to the round 1 and I wanna know which matches everything better.
1991tealRSt-topGuy, I'll PM you.

IROCZTWENTYGR8,
I was under the assumption that the 1987 350 IROC-Z 's came with the more square **** and the lesser motors had the more rounded *****. This might be bologna but I thought if someone was presenting an IROC-Z as a 350 motor and it had the round shift **** for 87 it could not be a 350 but a 305 and were trying to pull a fast one on an unsuspecting buyer.
If you find a good original car I would keep whatever shifter it has.

That is actually incorrect. All cars 87-92 had the square shift **** no matter the engine. I like the round 1 better so I will change it, but I will keep the other 1 for the originality of it, that way I can do whatever.

My buddy just bought a 87 Z28 with LG4/auto and it has the round ****. The car is all original low miles.
I agree with iroc22 on at least the year 1987. They were starting out with the square ***** on the 1987 350's and when they used up the supply of round ***** for the lesser auto shifted motor's just did the switch as an inline production change. Just my theory.
I not sure on the exact switch but even the 50-- 1986 350 mule cars had the round ****.

We did a poll about this once. It came out all 87's had the square ****. Every 87 non 350 I've seen had it too. To have that **** the shifter has to be changed because the thread pattern is different. I don't think any1 has ever seen 1 of those pre 87 350's but if they are out there still, they should have the round ****. Its possible iroc22 that it was switched, or maybe very few came with them. I just like the looks of it better.

Yeah, when something like that changes they tend to use the extras in their stock at times. We've seen it with the Wonderbar.
