I'd like to apologize ahead of time for posting this here. I know this not really related to history and restoration but I wasn't sure were else I could post this.
I used to own an 84 z28 and sold it a long time ago for a more reliable car as it was my daily. Well not that I am better off, I wanted to get back into the hobby/sport and I set out to find another thirdgen. I haven't had the best of luck finding on here in ohio though I have found a couple. So now I am trying to decide on what to do.... please give opinions on anything you find noteworthy.
I found an 87 Camaro v6. I thought about getting this and just swapping in a 350 down the road. I did some reasearch and found that this might be a big hassle. Eventually 80% of the car would be replace as I plan on restoring/rebuilding the car over the course of several years as money slowly leaks in. But at the same time I want it to be as painless as possible, so doing a 350 in a v6 donor didnt seem like the best idea. The car runs great, shifts smooth and generally seems ok. There is some cancer at the rear quarters but its not all the way through. Doors seem solid and fenders are rust free. Guy is asking $1500
During my search I have also bumped into the other two cars mentioned in my title. There is a 79 Firebird formula listed as a 301. I did a quick look at the info and was under the impression (from info I found) formula's did not come in 301's. Please correct me if I am wrong and your thoughts on this car as well. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet but I will be checking it out tomorrow or monday. It's listed as running, could restore car or point a-b car. Listed at $1500 also.
Finally there is an 85 Monte Carlo SS on a carlot here in town. It's got a window sticker so I am assuming its gonna be enough $$ to finance and that means $2000+ There is some rust on the lower quarters and the doors as well althought not as bad as the camaro. Not sure on the price as the dealer was closed and doesnt list prices on the cars. I am planning on looking into this one tomorrow as well.
Assuming the SS is in the $2500 range which would you go for and why? Also it would be much appreciated if I could get a link to some good message boards for the 2nd gen fbody and the 4thgen gbody for future reference.
Thanks in advance.

the only thing i can help with (and also add my .02) is answering the question on the Formula's behalf. Yes, the 79-81 Formulas did in fact come with the puny 301. this engine is very weak (unless in turbo form) and has very, very, very little room for improvement. although, if you wanted to convert to a real V8, it is a LOT easier. the classic Formula would be my choice, but i AM biased (read the sig...). take my advice, stay AWAY from the V6 'maro. my friend just did a 350 swap in one of those, an '82, and now he has to contend with the V6'ers other problems (e.g. handles like ****, etc..) but it is your decision, good luck

Avoid the V6 to V8 swap idea entirely...I sold my mint '89 RS solely because once I saw what it would take to swap, I'd be crazy to try it...
I would avoid the Formie too...old car + 2nd gen design = major rust possibly. Go newer...the $$ you'll spend fixing rust on an old car like that could easily buy a newer one!!
I say find out the price on the Monte, then if its solid go with that....

Post this question at the forums at www.montecarloss.com
BTW - I own an 88 IROC and an 83 Monte Carlo SS. Actually, both are for sale, too. I think I am out of your price range, though. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. I would have posted this at those Monte Carlo boards, but then they would have said to post it elsewhere as well because the questions pertains to three different types of cars.
I still know however, it shouldn't have been posted here. Well the Formula is gone, the v6 is out of the question now so the last bet is indeed the Monte Carlo. I haven't been able to get a price on it yet, but I'll post in this thread again if I find out.
Further questions I'll post in the proper areas, thanks again.
