1986 factory 350 issue put to rest!
I sent an email to Scott Settlemire at GM. For those of you that do not know who he is, he is the Corvette/Camaro Brand Manager in Detroit for Chevrolet. He is also an avvid Camaro guy and loves the car as much as some of us. There are history issues that he does not know, but he has the resources to find the answer. I asked him about the potential for an 86 350 car being built and being available to the public. Here is our correspondence:
Scott,
I need to know who I can talk to at GM regarding the past history of 3rd gen Camaros. Many people have said they own an 86 350 IROC. We have yet to prove the existance of *ANY* 86 350's that came from the factory and put into the publics hands. Are there any such beasts and if so, how many?
Scott Moyer

Here was his reply:
Our records do not show any 350 IROCs being built for the public.....IF you can get a VIN, I would be pleased to research it!

But if you read what Scott said, he claims that none were built for the public. The guy that said he has a test mule is a public person. He worked for the testing facility, not GM. That makes him public.

I could be standing here with the VIN of every thirdgen ever produced as proof, and the debate would still never go away. Everybody thinks their car is some kind of hot **** and better than everybody elses. Mine has the ultra-rare-only-sold-to-italian-immigrants-that-worked-for-the-head-of-GM-on-tuesdays chrome plated disco ball option and you can't prove it doesn't!

Has anyone been able to get any info on what happened to these cars. Can Scott Settlemier confirm that there were indeed 50 of them produced for testing? If there were what happened to them(although we hear most were crushed right?)

There were 50 Test mules of the 350s in 86. If there were any released out they were sold as USED cars only.
Yes I read what Scott Settlemire Said.
Something else Scott Settlemire is not the Brandmanager he is the Asst Brandmanager lol.
Hes a great person to get to know & loves being around car ppl & Camaro lovers. I should know I met him 2 yrs ago in person.

As was mentioned before, test mules were not released to the public. They did not meet safety standards and are illegal to be sold because of this. That's why car manufacturers usually crush these cars after testing.
Also, I know he is the Asst. Brand Manager, I was just using fewer words to describe who he is. As far as anyone is concerned, he IS Mr. Camaro, the FBodfather! Yes, he is a great guy and I too know him personally. It's actually kind of nice when he recognizes your voice on a radio show and knows who you are!!

Heck on Sunday I saw a 88 (or was it a 89) Iroc with a 350 in it Not uncommon. But It did have a stock 5sp in her. It was one of 25 cars that were made as Test mules. The owner Did Order the car from the dealer ship as well. It still holds its Build sheet, & everything else. all numbers Matched to when i checked out the vin & stuff & the RPO codes on the car

I think you will find that ALL cars will have a vin that are made by GM... Muels, Prototypes, etc, they might not be in the usual place (under the windshield) but they will probably be there for identification purposes. What would happen if GM made 50 test mules and they needed to know why car x blew its motor, they would want to know what EXACTLY that car has been through and why it broke.
its for identification...
