My parents bought me a blue 1990 Iroc when i turned 16.I ended up wrapping it around a tree a few months later and they made me drive a berretta until i turned 18.I ended up keeping the berreta until i was 20 then bought a 98 silverado then an 01 tahoe this past december.A few weeks ago i woke up one morning and decided i wanted another camaro so the tahoe went on autotrader.com sold in 2 days and 2 days after it sold i had a 91 RS sitting in my driveway. That decision did'nt go over to good with the girlfriend but she got over it.I still want to get another iroc though and im also looking at a 92 Z/28.I might buy the Z and keep it at my parents house for a while so i dont **** of the ol lady again.

Car: 87 Z-28
Engine: A worn-out 305
Transmission: T-5, until it dies
My current car (87 Z-28) story is a direct result of a previous
Camaro, my every option 84 L-69 car.
In mid 83, I began test driving everything I could lay hands on,
finally deciding on that arrest-me-red Z-28. Right off the show-
room floor, we had difficulties, that car and me....
The hatch struts were blown with 8 miles on the odometer, and as
I was showing the defective cargo cover to the service writer, the
hatch loop smacked me on the back of the head rendering me
unconscience for a few minutes.... ! Next up was the dead
ECM and fuel pump, that the GM dealer could find no fault with...
but they did my repack my wheel bearings and general undercar
inspection.....great! Only there was 800 miles on the odometer.
I had to threaten litigation to get my keys back. So I de-computerized the car with an older carb and distributor-ran
just ducky then. It was about that time I got bitten by the speed
bug. First was the headers and dual exhaust. Then came the
Edelbrock intake. A buddy of mine and I were competing, and
he built a wicked 350 for his 70 C-10 shortbed. So I put a B&M
blower on mine. He changed gears, I threw nitrous on. He built
a 383, I built a 454 with an 8-71, and plate nitrous, tubbed it,
Alston chassis, etc....I won. While I had the car, for a grand total
of 8 months(4 of which it was in the shop), the car was hit 4
times. You would think that a bright red car with a huge blower
hanging out of the hood would be hard to miss.... !
While in the race car shop again for tearing out the differential,
the welder threw a spark into the interior, and before anything
could be done, the car was engulfed in flames, burning to the
ground and taking 6 other race cars with it, as well as a bunch
of mechanics' tools. The shop had very minimal insurance, and
were not supposed to be doing any welding, grinding, etc....
I looked at sueing, but would have ended up with nothing, so
all of us that lost our cars decided to let the owner pay us back
with labor. After a year or so, he gave it up, and turned to drugs
as his new friend.
As much of a curse as that car had, I still missed it, and knew
that one day, when the situation was right, I'd have another.
Now I'm married with children, and my speed days have come
to a sunset, but I can still make a cool looking ride!
My current Z-28 I lucked into-a friend of mine works at a Nissan
dealership, and an old couple brought this car in to trade, but
since it was so old, they didn't get much for it. Instead of sending
the car for auction, the dealership gave first dibs to the employees. My bud bought it for $1200, did a couple of things
to it and sold it to me when he felt comfortable that it was right.
It came at a perfect time, as my big old 4 door one ton 454 truck
was eating as much gas as I could feed it-while the gas crunch
was on. After dumping $400 a month in gas, my wife said that
I had best start looking for something else...So I sold my treasured
Colt Lightweight Commander (Novak full-house gun), and went
looking for anything that got better than the 7mpg my beloved
truck got. I almost bought a beater S-10 with no a/c or p/s for
$2k (it did have a brand new motor and tires), but someone beat
me to it by 20 minutes. An hour later, in walks my buddy, who
in jest ask me when I'm gonna take the Camaro off his hands.
I promptly pulled out my pile of greenbacks and said how 'bout
right now! It's a great, clean car whose only real problem is
the cooling fans, but I'm currently addressing that! Thanks for the
opportunity to tell my tale of woe!

Car: 1988 Iroc-Z Camaro
Engine: 5.0L 305 TPI
Transmission: 700R4
Almost four years ago a friend of my dad had gotten into some money issues and needed money fast. He was visiting my dad and drove over in his 1988 Iroc-Z. The car was flawless because he takes realy great care of his cars. I told him I would give him $1000 cash on the spot if he left me his car, since he needed the he really did not have much of a choice. It was basically a steal because the only thing wrong with the car was that it has a pontiac steering columb because his brother broke it one night while drag racing. Apparently his brother did not know the cars front end lifts of the ground when drag racing. He got scared and hung on to the steering wheel causing the columb to brake. I felt a little bad for ripping him of like that, until he came to drop of the cars title in his 86' Firebird. Turned out the guy owns two birds and one other Camaro (85').

My Cars

Hey Iam having my mid life crissis. After 20 years in the Navy. Me and the wife decided to have our mid life crisis together.

My first 3rd Gen is a 1989 firebird XS 2.8 auto . We were looking at a GTA 88 but the guy was being a butt head. ANd the deal fell through.

A few weeks later we were eating at Mcdonalds and across the street in was a 1989 Firebird XS. Maroon and was really nice. Had only 114000 miles on it. Gray interior. Called the number and the guy who was selling it. Was selling it for his daughter in Law. We drove it then talk to him. He came down to 2200.00.

After getting it home it needed a new steering gear box hoses and pump (lots of metal) Put new spark plug wires cap and rotor. I added a Rear hatch defrost, rear hatch release. Split seats in the back. Rear compartment hatch. Sun shade. T/A hood from a 87 and T/A tail lights.

My 1992 Formula with a 350 5.7 700 r4 with 94000 miles. On my way to work I saw the car setting in a used car lot. I stop one day and test drove it and ask what was the asking price. He said 3500.00

He said cash would do some talking. A few days later. I came back with cash we talked some more and I told him what was wrong with the car. He finally came down to 2600.00

It has the wrong bumper on it. It was in a minor wreck. Iam going to fix that along with the right blinkers etc. But right now just try to get running right. Safe and a daily driver.

I put new tires, struts, rear hatch. New pads and rotors all the way around.

Plan on a new master cyl and rubber lines. Brakes just don't feel right.

It is black with metallic green. That will be changed back to the orginal green. The wife likes that color.

When i turned 17, my dad said we could go looking for a cool car to buy, and all i could think about was getting a 3rd gen camaro . I worked gigs at nightclubs and around town with a band saving up money during school, but it wasnt near enough. Then i got a huge scholarship to go to a private college, so my dad said we could spend the money he had saved up for school towards the car. It just so happened a guy my dad worked with was selling a 1982 pace car. $1500 and a paint job later we had a totally rebuilt camaro sitting in the drive way.

Car: VIN=85 T/A, CAR=82/3 T/A gfx, go figure. She's a T/A anyway!
Engine: 5.0, Holley 600 cfm 4-barrel
Transmission: THM350 ??
Got my 'Bird a couple of months ago, from a friend in a local motorcycle club. He'd decided that he needed a hearse to advertise his business (Gothic clothing and jewellery store!). Anyway the car was just parked ouside his house, hardly been run in the previous 12 months in need of some TLC. Well the price was right (in fact my wife bought the car for me!! RESULT). Morticia (that's what I've called the Firebird. Sad eh? ) is now having money spent on her as I can afford when I'm not putting fuel in her and having fun!

I've always loved V8 engines. Always loved US cars such as Camaros, Corvettes, Mustangs and Firebirds. My wife lamented the day many years ago when she made me get rid of my Rover SD1 3500 SE (Rover's late 70s-80s large 5-door hatchback using the Buick derived 3.5 litre), so at last she decided we needed another toy. I did have a plan to get a tax-exempt (pre 1973) muscle car ('69 Camaro or Dodge Charger) before I'm 40. Maybe the plan will still happen, but for now Morticia's F-body does it!

Cheers,
Mark.

I first logged on to this site... www.cars.com and searched for a early 90s Camaro with GFX cause I thought they looked cool.. and third generation camaros reminded me of 80s metal which I thought was also soo cool socal! Then with 2k in my pocket I call up this guy who was selling a 91 Camaro RS V8 auto for 2000k so I talk to him and he gives me directions to his house... me and my brother head on over there and this car grabs my attention!

So I meet the seller and I sit I look at the engine look inside the car and the outer body.. everything looks great except for the dashboard and the headliner.. and the dent in the right fender and hood.. but I love it and I want it!!! so I tell the guy I only had 1,800 either take it or leave it and wave the cash in his ugly face.
And he says 2k! so I say alright well later.. then his son talks to em and the seller agrees! And im just super excited!!! Got a new job! got a new girlfriend! now a new car! (well new to me) Im just the luckiest mother f*cker on earth! So we sign the agreement I pay him... and off I go! then months later tranny ****s up... the windshield wipers and the headlights do not work... but then I fixed em thanks to someone on here!! forgot your name sorry! thank you though!

And then I just start working on it and learning about cars!

Heres a before and after session! bought the car in November 04'
Love really lies in Fall!

Before!

After

This is my first real car that I own and drive!

I used to have a 1970 Camaro (parents said it was mine but they had it under thier name and they drove it) when I was 14
Then a ****ty toyota landed on it and crushed it... wasnt really mine.. my dad and brother drove it

I love my 91 and Ill never get rid of her even through these hard times of unemployment I face right now!!!

Upon selling my old, tired 1990 Corsica, I was looking for a Camaro with a V8. Didn't care if it was a 350 TPI or an L03 V8, I just wasn't going to get one with a V6.

I looked on Autotrader and recycler.com forever and never really found any good deals until I looked on eBay. There was this guy in Los Angeles selling this really good looking RS. So I came on here and asked questions and found out it was a good car.

So I waited until 5 seconds were left until I bid my max, $2,100 on it. Ended up only ending at $1,850. I was so excited, I felt like I was going to have a heart attack, because I had either wanted an F-body or a Corvette for a really long time. I couldn't concentrate in class for the 2 weeks I had to wait before I could pick it up.

I had sold my Corsica for $900 and saved up the remaining $900 from my job (Not bad for an 18 year old to pay for his own car I think) and finally we went to go pick it up. I had seen 3rd gen Camaros on the road, but I never had really got a really good closeup look of them.

It was a 1.5 hour drive to go pick it up. We had McDonalds and I had diarreah so bad and we were in Mid-day L.A. traffic so there wasn't much I could do. I felt like I was going to crap myself. My mom rushed to the place where we were going to pick it up (it was a gas station.. hmm) and the second I got out of the car and saw it sitting there my diarreah feeling just vanished. I felt calm and excited. I dropped everything and ran towards it.

I examined it while my dad went in and told him we were there to pick it up. Then I started it up. I heard the V8 rumble and knew then it was mine. Popped the hood, checked out the motor for the ride home, examined all the features of the car (I thought the automatic closing hatch was the coolest thing in the world), and finally sat down in it.

My Corsica felt like a 4x4 compared to this low car. I felt like I was sitting on the ground but it felt like it fit me. The seat was designed just for me, along with the steering wheel and the shifter. I fell in love and couldn't wait for the 1.5 hour drive home.

Then on the ride home, I opened her up. I thought it was a super fast car because honestly I had never really ridden in a fast car because I was only 17 at the time. Then I would stop and floor it and feel the torque push me back in the seat. I was loving it to death. It was highway all the way home and was surprised that the gas gauge hardly went down the whole way home, all 89 miles of it.

Then I get back and my neighbor with a '74 Vette exclaims "hey nice car man, nice step up!" and I felt so proud that the owner of the beautiful Vette thought my new car was cool. Then I took it home, took pictures and cleaned it up.

Then, about almost a year later, I realize this car is extremely slow and am planning alot of things for it, but I still love it to death. I will remember the day I picked it up for the rest of my life.

on one hand I feel bad for posting to this thread twice...esspecially with the second one only containing a real short message but...I'm too excited.

It's HERE!

*bounces off the walls happily*

ok so what I know about the car so far:
-----------------------------
<b>car stuff</b> ^_^
1984 White Pontiac Trans Am (Firebird) w/black undertrim
Power Windows
Power Locks
Power mirrors
5-Speed Posi
4-wheel disc brakes
Glass T-Top
305-V8 L69 (9.5:1 CR, 5.0L Displacement, 190hp@4800rpms, Torque:240@3200rpms, 4bbl HO induction)
-----------------------------
<b>To Fix List:</b>
- <s>Thermostat replacement (needs a 195 degree, not the 160 degree that was in there, was running way too cold)</s>
- Adjust the current headlights so that they're even and properly aligned
- Replace non-working radio (<a href="http://www.cardomain.com/item/PIODEHP47DH">Pioneer DEH-P47DH</a>)
- Interior Fabric (need to decide on a place for this and get some estimates)
- Emergency Brake (doesn't work at all, hose problem?)
- Double Check speedometer accuracy (pretty sure it's slow...need to research how, pretty sure I saw some howto's a while ago)
- Rear Latch (key lock is missing but mechanism is there. It just needs a really REALLY long screwdriver to open...which I have as a temporary fix)
- Repaint to eliminate rust, put a clearcoat on it, replace logos (keeping with the white w/ black undertrim colors for the paintjob, gonna try and keep the stock styled logos but perhaps painted instead of stickered)
- Replace the power locks (maybe just needs lubricant, need to open up the doors and check/test)
- Replace the power window motors with something that has more umph (the windows are sloooooooooooooow...but functional)
- A/C Conversionfrom old system to new system (low priority due to T-Top ^_^)
A/C conversion Links: <a href="https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17258&highlight=air+conditioning+convert">1</a>
-----------------------------
<b>Desired Mods:</b>
- <a href="http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/191601">Redraif</a> style <a href="http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/715283/12">light mods</a>
- <a href="http://www.cardomain.com/ride/715283/8">Suncoast Ram Air hood (with ram air system)</a> (again, inspired by <a href="http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/191601">Redraif</a>) (kinda debating this one...not sure if I will or not, the stock bulge is growing on me ^_^)
- Interior panels/dash all body color (white w/clearcoat...think ipod white) instead of the current black
- 4-Speaker Replacement w/amp (still needs research on which ones to get)
-----------------------------

*looks for digital camera to upload pictures of his new project car*

(to note: I know extremely little about cars so I'm learning a lot...that search button will be worn by the time I'm done with it ^_^)

I live in amarillo, tx and after a dumb woman rammed my 88 GTA at school i decided to turn my sights to an IROC after owning an 85 TA, 86 Monte Carlo SS, and an 88 GTA. With $4100 in insurance money I started looking up IROCs on ebay, autotrader, cars.com, TGO, etc. I found one in chicago, ill. after a few conversations w/ the seller i learned that it was an 88k original mile 89 iroc. but the motor had a fuel or spark problem so the moronic kid goes and rebuilds the whole engine, and transmission (had all the paperwork to prove it too). the selling price was $4500 OBO. i DROVE from amarillo to chicago (roughly 16 hrs.) went to western union and got the money. i'm a bargainer as well so i put $3000 in his face and HE TOOK IT, $1500 less than what he was asking! i was shocked. my buddy who went w/ me had to be back in town for school, so we rented a motel and i proceeded to drive for 16 hrs. straight back. i drove from amarillo to chicago and back in one weekend, a pretty unbelievable task to some but i got it done. i love the IROC so much, and it made it w/o any problems what so ever on the way back too!!

Money talks VOLUMES, I have purchased several cars that way...

Flash the cash and you can buy almost anything for what you want to spend...

Just a note, it does not work on dealers .

I got my parts car from a guy about 45 min away. I bought it, then went home, got my camaro plates, and called CAA(the same as AAA in the states). When the tow truck driver came he wanted me to try and turn it over, but I told him there wasn't a battery. He asked why, and I said it blew up, so I gave it to the guy over there amd pointed to some random house with its garage door open. He bought it, and I got the car towed home for free.

Brand new March 1, 1990 and 48 payments of $454.27 later she was all mine. It's funny how over ten years later i still remember how much the payment was. I guess if you write a check out for that much 48 months in a row you remember.

I bought my first third gen summer of 88, it was an '82 Z28 CFI. The car had been stolen, when it was recovered the owner didn't want to spend the money to repair it so he junked it. I bought it from the junkyard. The tranny was burned out, the cam was shot, and a pushrod had come up throught a rocker. I fixed all that and drove it for the summer.

I bought my 89 new the next March, I had the car 2 weeks when some low-life tried to steal it. I made the first payment on the car while it was still in the body shop. I had to sell the 82 to pay the balance of the repair that the insurance wouldn't pay. I drove this car for 10 years with the LO3 in it, then yanked the LO3 and dropped in an L98. I sold this car for parts last summer, it broke my heart. The body needed more work than the car was worth.

Bought my third one, also an 89 formula, in the fall of 99 from a local mechanic. It was a customers car who could not afford to pay for the work that was done on it, so he gave it to the mechanic. I bought it for the cost of the repairs. I had that for about a year then sold it to a friend who LOST it (long story)

My forth and last one,(so far) is an 86 Z28 lb9.
I was gasing up the formula when a business aquaintance pulled up behind me and asked me if I would be interested in his camaro, so I bought it. The car has spent most of the last 3 years in storage but became my daily driver when I sold the formula.

My 1st 3rdGen was a 1989 gray RS Camaro. I traded in my 84 Fiero for it; I really thought the 5-speed t-top car made me king shyte. It was fun until I saw my next one...

3G #2 was a 1991 Z28 burgundy Carmaro. I really dug the hard top! Funny but until then I never noticed the cool spoiler on those cars and it flipped my switch. I had never owned or much less driven a 350 before so once again, I bought a car that upped my man-status to all my friends. When that car was waxed...WOW it was a beaute. Unfortunately I dumped the girlfriend in the next description and couldn't afford both the $300+/mo payment and food, so I sold it.....ugghh..for a Cavalier. (at least it was a 5-speed Cav)

3G #3 was not really "my car'. My girlfriend at the time traded in her 198something Honda Prelude (the real small early 80's one) and got the red 1989 TBI L03 Formula. I loved that car, probably more than i loved her (guess that's why she was is an ex). We were quite a couple, me w/ the Z28 and her w/ the Formula! I think my neighbor asked me if we were competing to see who had the bigger spoiler. Time went on, and I felt like "restoring" something. Such as I could afford, I painted it, str8tened the frame (yeah..the frame..), no engine mods because...I didn't know how. It looked badass, forest green w/ the "flakes". Eventually we broke up and the next week she slid around a turn and propped it up on a guard rail, sending the LR wheel down an embankment with all it's brake parts still sttached.

Fast forward to last october (10 years later), as I was still aching (men ache for cars, right?) for another Formula. I searched for about 3-4 months on eBay and auto trader looking for 1) Black! 2) 5-speed 3) 350. I didn't know they din't make 350/manual. Anywho, I found #55,512 up for auction. LB9, 5-speed, black. They paiinted a pretty picture: clean interior, wet-beaded paint job, nice wheels, etc. I paid $4300 (sight unseen-stupid) for it as I let my emotion take over the bidding. Yes I paid too much for what turned out to be a LEMON. I got it w/ no oil pressure, one headlight working, filthy interior, filthy exterior complete with all the surface rust you could order up that model year, and a puddle of oil that accumulated it's 1st night in my garage. The rear main seal died, 4 of the 5 cylinders tested put out 25% compression (I stopped testing after that), but the wheels were nice. AND, after i got into my resto-mod, I found the car had not ONE rust spot/area on the frame or underneath. Wow I got lucky on that one as it was a Wisconsin car for the 1st half of it's life. My wife & I are both tauruses, so after the initial anger subsided, we contacted eBay for the obvious fruad (and shill bidding which I won't get into) perpetrated on me. eBay refunded $3000 of my purchase price. so I really paid $1300; not bad considering the seller, (Carol Jansen, Glen St. Mary, Florida, {extensive expletive stream goes here} paid $1000 when she bought and did nothing but let it rot.

So, that's where it is now. It was $16,071 new and I've got about $21,000 in it now. No, I'm not going to ever sell it, I built it for my pleasure and mine alone.

The Fiero was such a chic magnet.........

I've had a crush on camaros forever. No one I knew had one, but I thought they were the best. So my junior year i bought a 92 Z28. I loved the car, put a lot into it. Dropped in an LT1 bored out to a 383, twin turbo, 6-speed, suspension all around, 4 wheel disc, 17" wheels, stereo system, full exhaust, t-tops, red w/ black stripes. Anyway, I took it out one day after finishing up with the turbo set up, i was up to about 160, 5th gear, asphalt ended, gravel appeared, 5 ft. ditch, corn field, totaled car. So yeah, my baby was dead. So after that, i bought a 2002 SS. Left that fairly stock, just put on slp air box, slp headers, cat back, chip, stereo system. But i still yearned for my 3rd gen- so light, so maneuverable, so purty. So i bought a 91 RS with 130000, miles on her, bone stock, few glitches. And i had plans for her, i was basically gonna make her a Z/SS. I bought her for $1500. But about six months later i saw a beautiful 92 Z28 sitting outside a local shop. 350 TPI , AT, 4-wheel disc, mint condition, low miles. Good thing I know the guy. I talked him down to $4000. He took the RS for a trade in. Counted for $600. Gotta love those trade in values. Now I love the Z. There's still more I plan to do, but she's coming along great. And i have my 02 for my daily. I've already put full exhaust, headers, chip, ss hood, ram air, upgraded brakes,17" American Racing Torq Thrust II rims.Gotta love those 3rd gens! Build a Bad Bowtie.

After owning Ford cars that needed constant expensive repair work as a teen ager. I switched to a mazda MX6 for my sport car addiction when I joined the military at 18. I always wanted a real muscle car but could never afford them or their insurance.

Fast forward 5 years...

Now married and with over $5000 in parts in my Mazda my wife got pregnant. I felt obligated to get a family vehicle for her. Since I had just bought a brand new Jeep Wrangler, I was short on cash for a third car. So I did the responsible thing and sold the car and bought her a minivan. After a few months of feeling down without my car, I started looking for a new project car much to my wifes dismay.

I found my car hiding in my home town 600 miles away on auto trader. Already had the wheels, and had switched out the motor to a 350 with a 750 holley. Interior in great shape except for missing seatbelt guides. Body was crap but I didn't care. The guy had left the car sit in the garage and was getting divorced. Told me he wanted $1750 for it. I told my wife I was going to get it.

I called the guy back and told him I was going to come up and get the car that weekend. He told me It was already sold. I freaked out! Without my knowledge the wife had called my mom. She had bought the car for me! She even put new tires on and a new exhaust. I was speachless. I have had my car since July now, and have finished rebuilding the engine. I love how cheap and available Chevy parts are. I personally only have a little more than $2000 in the car, and she can really fly. Thirdgens are definately the last of the true muscle cars.

I bought my z from my sister's boyfriend after he got a crack in the rad and run it hot and blowed a headgasket. after he parked it i asked him how much he wanted for it and he told me 2k so i said no.

So after it sitting for 7-8 months i went and offered him a 1000 bucks and he took it. and that was in oct.

come to find out the car had been changed over to a l98 and the motor had 20 k on it. so i put in new injectors ( 24 SVO) and got the correct memcal and prom for it ( AUJP) and the rest is history LOL mods are in SIG

Right now you have a $4000 GTA and a $14,000 GN, you would end up with a $6000 GTA and a $3000 GN.

my dad bought the 1985 sc from a dealership in 1993 they screwed up on the sticker and asked $2000 for it when the 2k was supposed to be the down payment. he had COPD so when some shop screwed up the valves he bought a 1992 RS 305 TBI. so i gave him $2000 in 1997 for the 85 when it came back from the shop on the warranty work. so i promised him in 2003 that i would build the car 1 week before he died. so now i have the 1985 with the blown v6 and my 1992 rs as my daily driver. well the 85 is getting a 400 put in it with a t56 in place of that ol 700r4

My 87 Trans Am

I bought my 1987 Trans Am is December 2005 after waiting and wishing I had one for more than 10 years. When I was 19, I wanted a silver 86 TA with TPI and T-tops and managed to find one but could not afford the insurance and still have any money for college. So I put it off for a few years- then I got married and put it off for a few years- then my son was born (a few years), then my daughter was born (a few more years). Next thing I know I'm about to crack 30 and I still have never had the pleasure of owning the Trans Am I always wanted.

After sitting down and really thinking about it, I talked with my wife and told her that I have put this off for years and I wasn't willing to put it off anymore for anyone. She was very cool with that, and basically just said ok, if it will make you happy. With that I started searching here locally in northwest Ohio- there was a beat up loaded 84 TA for $700 that I very briefly considered, a highly modified hardtop 84 with a 455 (bad bodywork but they still wanted $4k for it). I picked up the local Auto Trader and as the found a couple cars worth seeing about. The first guy I called had this red and silver 87 Trans Am sitting in his parents garage in Findlay. I had the afternoon off so I headed down there and checked it out- it had everything I wanted- 5.0 TPI, T-tops, all power, and only 77K on the clock. I wasn't real hot on the GTA rims but after one short drive, I knew that I had found my Trans Am. $3200 later I drove her home. I have repaired a lot of small problems with the car, put on new tires, all fluids changed, and had a complete tune-up and now she purrs like a kitten.

This website has been a big help with solving those little problems. Thanks to all of you!

Me, too... sort of... a matter of Fate + Finances = Formula

All three of my thirdgens were spec'd and ordered by me: a black w/silver 1982 Z28 w/t-tops, which was my first car; then a black w/silver 1983 Z28 HO(L69) w/t-tops, which no one even realized was a different car, lol; and finally, my black 1987 Formula w/t-tops, which I still have.

Unfortunately, the '82 was pretty basic and had no performance to speak of. So when the L69 became available, I ordered one and sold my '82 at the dealer's summer tent sale(where they had no Camaros to offer). My L69 arrived in July of '83. Then after nearly a 3-year love affair with that car, it was stolen in May of '86 and never recovered.

I've done VIN search after VIN search for that car, and nothing has ever turned-up--like it never existed. So if it didn't get parted-out then and hasn't been junked by now, it's running around with a "new" VIN and/or probably a different color. So if anyone has(or knows of) an L69 with a questionable VIN...

It was black w/silver gfx and a charcoal custom cloth interior, the combination of which came with red "Z28" rocker and bumper emblems and red exterior striping, it had t-tops and, just a reminder, the '83 L69 only came with a 5-speed. The only "customizing" I'd done was to remove the red stripe when the car was new, and I'd installed the 140mph "Z28" speedometer. Its VIN was 1G1AP8776DL156901. Also a reminder, 7 was the VIN code for the L69 in '83. It changed to G in '84... like any of that really matters now, lol.

Right after that, I got a private tour of the Norwood plant, where I learned that the 5-speed would be available with the TPI for 1987. So in late-summer '86, I spec'd and ordered a dark red metallic IROC-Z, grey leather interior, bose system, TPI, 5-speed, t-tops, 4-wheel discs, etc. But soon after ordering, I moved away, and the dealer let me out of the deal. So someone in or near Cincinnati got a "customer ordered" car off the lot!

Here's where I switched: after moving, I checked-out the Formula, which was about $4,000 less than the IROC for the same performance. I really liked that, so I spec'd one. I argued with the dealer about availability of my combination of option choices, so I had to phone Pontiac in MI about it. They told me I was right and that the dealer should simply submit the order, and the computer will accept it, which the dealer finally did. So in October of '86, my '87 Formula was ordered, it was built in December '86, and I got it on Jan. 6, 1987. So I've just celebrated its 19th "birthday."

My Formula has been an awesome car! I'm very, very happy I made the switch, and I'll never switch back--meaning, if I ever buy-to-restore a thirdgen, it will ONLY be another Formula! I could make ONE exception though--my '83 L69, if it should ever turn up, which isn't likely. But that's only for sentimental reasons.

I bought a 91 RS 305 TBI mainly because of the new teal color and T-tops(very big chick magnet). Of course, the power left a little to be desired and I lost a few stoplight duels in it. I even got into a race with a guy in a purple 92 RS. I still laugh about that one. I guess he wanted to prove his car was faster than mine because it was a different color. I had put a flowmaster and K&N on it by then, and his was stock eveidently. So I did beat him by a few cars. But I soon sold it because I got married and had a family to think of.

Fast forward a couple of years, and I bought a 68 Charger to restore and scratch my muscle car itch. I had owned a 70 Challenger when I was 19, so I started back with what I knew I guess. I worked and spent my heart out on that car for years, only to finally decide that Mopar parts are like buying gold and it just wasn't worth it anymore. I sold the car and all the gold unobtanium parts I had collected, paid some bills off, and thought I would just die a slow death, never again owning an exciting car.

A vendor from work who I knew was into old cars and muscle(he has at least 30 cars in his field including 5 GTOs) happened to stop by last month, and I asked him if he had any 3rd gens for sale. He said he had two and he would take 500 for both. I now have a 84Z28 5 speed almost complete(minus the engine) and a 91 RS V6 that's complete. I'm gonna part the 91 to pay for some of the parts I need for the 84. Hopefully I'll have the 84 done for my son's 16th in 6 years. Still thinking on that one though. I'm not sure I want a young version of me with a fast car. We'll see-

I been lurking for a few weeks, and have learned quite a bit on this board. I appreciate all the great threads and helpful individuals here. I know Mopars, but not alot about my Z28. I'm just grateful I can afford some of the parts for this project. I plan on building a mild 350, and just restoring the rest of the car.

Anyway- Great board and thanks to all here.

I buged my parents for a long time. It puts out low 300s at the fly, and low-mid 13's at the track. Good upgrade from my LG4. Now I can go fast.

I spotted my 91 grey RS in a supermarket parking lot. The guy selling it had bought it for his daughter but she kept sneaking out to do drugs with her boyfriend.
The guy said do it one more time and I will sell your car. She did it again!
V6, like new interior and straight body- put a chunk of money into it(bought it for $2600 and sunk $2000 into a new tranny within the month) but I will never sell it. I love these 3rd gens!

well

I was just out of highschool and going to college. Nineteen and I still had no car that was road worthy/would start. I had a 82' 1500 truck that had a hole in the engine that was it... I used a school loan to buy me my first car. $1100 The 83 Z28 I have now. Still has the few dents in it when I bought it, but a straight body, little to no rust, full power options. Had 2 previous owners, both women. It was the 2nd one (a teenage girl) that did that most damage I am sure. I have no idea what the mileage is but I use it as a daily driver. Very clean interior. When I purchased it, they thought it had alot of problems. I took it home, put a new battery, new spark plugs, new oil/filter. Fired up no problems.

I have done a hand full of things to it and it is still a work in progress of course. No 300 hp engine setup yet haha. Hey it is CFI. I do have a 350 in mind though in the future with a modded CFI setup. It is a cruiser and nothing more. I make $10 an hour, if I wanted to burn ricers I would be a broke man. Gas aint cheap.

This car has been a learning experience. While it has not required any major engine/tranny work, it has sparked a interest in autos at a mechanic level I have never had before. I am 23 now and I must say, I will keep this car till I die or till I crash it or it is stolen. I have always admired the sharp look of these cars. My uncle use to steal one every few months or so and bring them by my grandmas house and take me for a ride(she didn't care for that and yeah they eventually caught him). My dad had a couple of diffrent T/As which he both dogged the hell out of and wrecked. My aunt had one as well, my bestfriends mom had a really nice one when we were little. I grew up around them more or less.

Old picture 02', I have some Zr1s on it now (should of spent some of that money on a digi cam huh?) And yes the dent is still on that fender and money is being put aside for paint/body as I post this.

tyrvidar...

Tyrvidar,

Great story man! I can tell you have as great an appreciation for third gens as I (and everybody else here!) does!

I started out with the intention of doing a lot more to my motor than I have done. Getting the manifolds off for a header instalation changed my mind. I decided that everything on my motor had been there for 14years and that upgrading the existing motor would be nothing but pain!

I decided to just drive what I had until it needed replacement... I am getting a lesson now in just how dependable the LO3 was. That motor just won't quit. At
150,000mi she still doesn't use any oil!

I have plans to get a short block and build a motor from scratch to go in my car. Money is not the problem right now. Finding the time has been the real issue. Oh well, if she will keep on being as dependable as she has I won't complain a bit.

These cars are a TON of fun!

Speedy

I just got my 91 yesterday 2\8\06 It was on rout1 in jessup Md.
The nice young lady as asking for $1200 it has 173k with a
rebuilt LB9 and trans with 32k on them. She didn't have the title on and was waiting for it to come in the mail.,but she had the paperb work to show it was orded. So I took a look at the car
it has t-tops that leaked of course it was burgandy but painted purple of all colors. The dome and mirror lights and hatch button
didn't work.So I offered her a $1000and told her i'd give her $500
now and take the car with a notorized letter and give her the rest
when the title came.It came today.I have a 92 Z28 with 62k that was wrecked by some girl who decided to make a left turn in front of me.I have to take her to court because she said I was speeding.Anyway i'll put the 5.7 in the 91Z after this court thing is over with.I'm going to put an ss hood.slp headers, the duel cat exhust on it and a new intake stealth ram or somthing.I plan on getting a 01 or 02 WS6 Trans Am or 95-96 Impla SS when this is over. One thing for sure is I'll always have a 3rd gen.

i stumbled into mine. my son had a 92 bird and had totalled it out in a bad accident, so we pulled the motor and trans put it into a 91 rs , i parted the rest of the bird out and done so good i had to buy another car so, i got 4 other cars that were in very sad conditionparted them and i put a add up at the local wal mart buying these cars i got 1 call about a 85 firebird, i thoght a piece of crap so i went and looked it over body was great no rust no dents VERY straight interior was grey and rough new tires and a 305 carb, gave the lady $500 and drove the car home(hadn't been started in three monthes fired right up) it was in excellent shape and by the time i got home with it i had decided to keep it.
so at that time i had drove it around a little more and my mind was made up. i have had it 2 yrs now and not had a problem at all with it at this time swapped the interior out to black.
. so now it is in the shop getting a well deserved face lift. and i am also swapping out the 305 for a tpi l98 needless to say it has a permenent home

I bought an '82 T/A two years ago for about $700. It was a solid car with no rust and mechanically in great shape. Drove it daily during the summer and only needed to do minor maintanence.
Last month, I got it in my head I wanted to finally get a car I really wanted, an 85-92 Camaro. Just like the looks of them better. So after some searching, I finally found someone with one, and ironically they were on the same quest to find a T/A. So after much comunication, I traded cars with her, and now here before me the car I have dreamt of owning for 15 years, my 1989 IROC-Z.
