Got mine by accident.........was fooling around on craigslist and found it. Went that weekend to look at it and thought it was too good to pass up. Put a deposit on it that day and have been enjoying it ever since.

Sounds more like a case of eye candy, not an accident.

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
Got it from a dealership off a trade in about a year and a half ago. I had been doing one of my daily checks on craigslist and there it was. A 5.7L Iroc-Z listed at $3500. It was out of my budget but I told myself we could talk them down. Took the 30 mile drive to the dealership a few days later and saw the car on the lot with a kid from a rival high school looking at it. He ended up leaving and it was time for a test drive. I was in love. The very next day I came back, paid $2250 for it, picked it up, and drove it back at 6:00 at night on Feb 22. It was about 25 degrees out when we got it and at the same time we figured out that the cars heat didn't work. So, it was 30 miles of teeth chattering and sitting on hands as to not freeze to death!
Just a side note, the guy who traded it in bought a brand new Mustang! That definately left me scratching my head.

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
I found mine on eBay in upper New Hampshire. It was funny, someone actually bought it with a Buy it Now before I could talk to the owner, but it turned out to be a foreign scammer. I warned her about it, and she didn't believe me at first, but then when he said he wanted her to pay the shipping (he'd arrange it though) out of the big check he was going to send, she believed me. I took a day off of work, drove up and bought it that day.

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
I was 16 and just got my license. I was looking around for a car for quite a while. My grandpa up in Indiana owned this 84 firebird that I always remembered back to the times when I was a kid and was always at his house, and he would be working on it. He is old now, with bad arthritis and couldn't get in or out of the car anymore. It sat for years and all he did was put parts on it. When the time came around that I needed a car, he decided to hand it down to me free of charge. It sucks that I have moved a ways away from him, But I email him all the time with pictures of the work I have put in it.

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
Mine was offered to me by a buddy. The story goes that the son of another buddy bought it about 4 years ago. He ran it for less than a year, including some time after he wrecked it racing, and then said it had carb issues. The carb issues were caused by the lack of a CCC, while still having the original computer controlled distributor in it, but he didn't know that. He pulled the carb, then life interferred and he didn't get back to it. It sat for about 3.5 years with no carb, and got bounced between 4 houses.
One night my buddy and him were drinking, and apparently my buddy promised to give him $150 for the car, but he doesn't know anything about them or fixing them(toyota guy). I got told that since I wanted a Camaro, I could have it for $200, which gave my buddy $50 for storing it, and paid off the original owner.
Neither one ever realized that it was a true Z28, or that the whole problem was the computer. Now I get to rebuild the engine, since water got in from the stupid holes someone cut in the hood for 'air intakes'.
Still, I picked up a nice, almost rust free Z28 for $200. And I have a 350 sitting in my Blazer that can easily swap in should I not be able to get the existing 350 running. In that case I will scrap the 350 in it and should make back everything I paid and then some.

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
I was 13 and my dads friend was selling this 89 camaro. $200 no motor/trans. I was so excited at the time but had no idea what I doing or what I was going to do with it. Well she sat in the garage for about a year and a half and then when I was 15 I was working and got some money. I forgot that if I spent all the money on the motor I wouldnt beable to finish it. Well 5 years later she is done with 450rwhp and its a blast.

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
Found mine on Ebay , came all the way from Idaho. All original except for paint (painted original factory color). All it needed was a new set of fuel injectors and it is the most reliable third gen i have ever had. I thought all third gens were supposed to have battery drain over night lol (my last 3 did). I have since added a G92 rear out of a 88 T/A and Rear LCA and Panhard bar. I have new shocks and SFC waiting to be installed this summer. Finally have a reliable non hacked up IROC now only if it were white!
Re: How did everyone here get their car?
The car: 1985 Silver IROC 305 TPI auto. My dad bought it originally in 1993 from a friend of his' son. I believe he was the second owner. It only had 42K miles on it when my dad bought it. I drove it and probably put most of the ~3300 miles on it during the time my dad owned it. I kept trying to buy it off him but he wouldn't take payments. He had been trying to sell it with no luck. I had my 4 banger Sonoma for sale and my mom mentioned that dad ought to buy it. I told him if he wanted it I'd trade towards the IROC plus cash for the difference. He thought about it and ended up going for it. That was August of 2007. It now has just shy of 48K miles on it and is 98% original and I'm trying to keep it that way.

I got my 87 Iroc when I was 16 back in 1991--- Damn that seems long...
lol anyway Im restoring her right now cause she's been off the road since 2001 and due to uncontrollable situations in my life, my Baby was not taken care of like she should have been..
... anyway she is in good hands and will be brought back to her former glory... Also as much as I love my car I wish there was the Internet back then and forums like this one... back then I had no idea about all the diff options that came on these cars, and what the rpo codes were...all I knew was that there was a 305 and 350...
there is so much info on these cars now that im still learning new things that ive missed before... This forum is a godsend to us third gen owners... Anyway I really love seeing all this love for the third gens - the love for these cars were quickly fading after the 4th gens came along but really happy to see the love and demand coming back strong...

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
I was looking for a good cheap V6 car for a daily driver to park my truck. I had a deal on a 98 bonneville that needed an intake manifold gasket but the owner wanted to play games getting the lean released. I found my 91 Bird on Craig's List. I had been watching it and the price kept dropping. It started about 1500.00 and I bought it for 600. It wasn't running but had about 500 - 700 extra parts with the car. After I get it all fixed up I am going to swap the V6 to a 350TPI.

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
When I got my 87 iroc z28 I was actually going to see a different car over in Huntington Beach area. A friend and were driving along in my RS he saw it first and just shouted, LOOK IROC !! So we turned around but couldn't seem to find access to the street it was on. It was in kinda like a culdasac separated from us with a median. We finally got over to it and the owner was talking to someone else about the car so we waited to see if he was leaving. He did finally leave in kinda a hurry. So I said to the owner "I guess you sold it huh". He said well not really that guy had no cash and went to get some. Oh I said well I got cash right here right now. This roc was sweet to drive and sounded pretty good. It was a true iroc z28 with t-tops leather interior that looked fantastic and a 5.7 to boot. I saw the price he had on his sign and could tell he didn't know what he had. His son had been driving it but he was going into the military and he was a mopar guy so he didn't want to keep it. I said just a sec went over to talk to my friend pulled out 300.00 less that he was asking came back showed him the cash he said SOLD !! I nearly fainted I was almost ashamed of paying what I did for it,but he seemed happy. If I told you what I paid for it you would kill me, let's just say I jumped it and drove it away like I stole it. I have driven it 1200 miles to Texas and back it drives awesome. I've been updating the OEM equipment a little at a time. A/C freezes me out even on hot days. Paint job is on the menu next. yeeehaaaa

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
i had bought a 87 z28 that needed a lot of fixing up, and a guy who i lived a mile down the road from buys and sells used third gens. and one day me and my brother were there buyin some parts for my 87. i asked my brother to peek into a camaro sittin under a tree to tell me wether or not it had a stick in it because i was lookin to get a manual tranny. well it did and it also turned out to be a iroc and besides being really dirty it ran real good and all the electronics worked in it which my 87 was gonna need a new wiring system put in plus paint and body work. i offered a partial trade plus cash and now i have a 85 iroc tpi with a 5 speed because the PO had converted it from carb to tpi. now i just gotta find some iroc rims for it cuz the PO had some gay lookin ghetto rims on it! i had to put my 87's rims on it what a shame ya know?lol
Re: How did everyone here get their car?
I bought my first one for $500.00 not a block away from my house, drove it home re-arranged the plug wires b/c they were on wrong, fixed the skip in it and a year later, it's still runnin strong.

CREIGS LIST. THE BEST place to get great muscle cars (especial third gen T/As and Camaros) for a great price. I picked mine up for $2400. It was already lowered with the 17" rims and the paint job. And that is a pro paint job. Creigs list is where people who need cash now post their cars. You can get them for CHEAP. It needed a trans rebld though.

Well, I was dating a girl on 8/2002 that live in Dayton OH, I lived in NYC. I would fly to OH every three weeks and I was harassed every time I went threw security at the airports. I felt unconfortable and talk my self into driving there. I was looking for a car with ferocious style, I was lookin at autoshopper, com found a nice 1986 trans am for $900, by the time I left the dealer I got it for $600 without even hagglin with the guy, he just did it. Drove it home, everything worked. AC/heat, lights brakes. everything. got a tune up on 11/14/02 parked it had a bad rain storm few days prior, drove to OH 11/19/02 no heat! went through the Poconos temp of 19 out side. Drove 95>80>>71>70>75 exit 32. took me 15 hours no heat at of dead of winter. I will never forget that F-up drive. I hate it. but I kept driving to OH every 2 or tree weeks to see that girl for 3 years, drove that T-Top to Keywest 3 times, NC twice, kentucky 25 times. It's a great car.... Oh yeah, I married her in 2009 Car still represents us....

Re: How did everyone here get their car?
gotta resurrect the old post. I think its great to see all these stories. I bought mine about 3 months ago for $400. had 160000 miles, and a seized engine. body isn't great, a few dents and dings, and a beat up bumper assembly from what looks like an accident somewhere in the past. radiator had sludge in it, and the thing was pretty beat up, but I had to have it. now I finally got it running, with an overhauled 92 305 in it. I think I'm at probably 2000 spent on this car, and yknow what? I don't regret spending a penny of it. this thing is a blast. Now I have my second car for donor parts, and I'm just getting ready to finally make my baby look beautiful like it did when it was new. it's gonna be a long ride, but I can't wait.
