In my experience, the cheapest place to get your OEM CD player refurbished is throught your GM dealership. Believe me, I've tried other avenues on refurb-ing these units.... and GM has always been the cheapest.
Plus you'll get a full 12 month warranty on the repair.... instead of 90 days....

Or you can contact Friendly Chevrolet in Fridley, Minnesota (www.friendlychev.com). They are a GM restoration center and have these in stock for like $195 or $295 brand new NOS. Call the parts dept.

This is gonna sound dumb "scottmoyer" but do you know if that stock "89 cd will fit in a '86. I think it does but wondering can you confirm. I took love the OEM look over the aftermarket look and my OEM just died but I had the cass. with EQ set up. Does the CD come with EQ in the 89's?
All 3rd gen and even the 4th gen stereo systems have the same dimensions. It will fit fine. You might need the new wire harness to connect to the original, though. In 89, they changed the plug configuration. Metra has a wire harness that plugs into the factory harness and also plugs right into the stereo. No splicing of wires needed and it costs about $20. I think the part number is 70-1692

Great. I emailed Friendly Chevy and am waiting for a reply.
"scottmoyer" what is Metra and where is there address or phone so I can get that harness. I think this is gonna work out because this is one area where I wanted to keep that factory look. I want the green lites look too. Red won't work. Can that be ordered to or do we have to go into the radio?

Make sure you verify the part number for the wire harness before ordering. I think that's the right number, but I'm not sure. I can't find my receipt right now.
Metra is the manufacturer of the wiring harness that has the connector on both ends. They are the largest supplier of wire harnesses to installation companies. The company I used was Dealer Automotive Services in Minneapolis (800-394-8515). They can give you the correct part number. If you need to wire it up yourself:
