Did you know ... (N64 vs N65)

Perhaps a well known or not well know item.

The N64 Aluminum spare was created in order to fit 1LE optioned cars. The larger 12" front rotor and caliper would not fit inside the standard N65 spare.

Cool eh?

In my Player's technical documents from 1988 GM says that a new spare will be out shortly that will fit the new front brakes.

Just thought I would share this tidbit.

Sorry if it is old news.

Mark.

Thanks, I have the N64 spare in mine, nothing fancy, but I am missing that compressed air cylinder to fill it.

Nice theory... But its really too bad that the aluminum N64 spare was around as early as 85. The 1LE didn't come around till 88.

I don't when the N64 option was available, but I do know that GM released a "special spare wheel assembly to clear new brakes" as stated in a 1988 Technical handout for the players series. Since 1LE brakes were publicly available in late 88, it seemed to jive that the N64 was revised to provde adequate clearance for the 12" rotors.

But thanks for poking holes in my therory.

I'll then revise my Therory to state that the N64 Aluminum spare wheel assembly was revised in late 1988 in order to accomodate the larger brakes of the 1LE optioned cars.

The 1LE spare is aluminum but it looks like a regular painted steel spare. Much different than the earlier "good" looking aluminum spares.
