RPO codes - spid sheet vs. build sheet

Before I had a good selection of build sheets to examine, I used to think that build sheets listed *every* RPO on your car. Before that, I thought the spid sheet (a.k.a. rpo sticker) listed them all.

As it turns out, with the help of a friend on here I discovered that neither piece of documentation lists them ALL. I've only seen the spid sheet AND build sheet from one car, AFAIK, and they overlapped about 75%, but each one had a few RPO's not found on the other. And I'm sure there are RPO's for that car that neither of the sheets listed.

Anyone know why / how they decide what rpo's go where? Or if someone has the build sheet AND spid sheet from their car, could you list it on here? The discrepancies can be hard when you're trying to complie a list of ALL your car's rpo's. thx

i dont know the answer to your question, but when i pulled my dash off, i found a tag that looked like the pic below. it had 8 RPO codes a date and a time. The RPO code U21 was not on my SPID sheet from the console, but it was on this dash tag.

I havent looked for the build sheet yet, but i highly doubt that it is in the car.

The numbers 'IP' in the top row and the 'Test results'...i have no idea what these means. Any ideas?

Really? Do you have any examples, I've never heard that before. I thought for sure the SPI Label had them all...

a few examples off the top of my head

2PZ - That's the code for '82 3.23 posi axle. in '83 it was 4PZ, '84 was 6PZ, and from there on out I don't know, but it varies by year, ratio, and posi / no posi. Never seen those codes anywhere.

9D0 - "Order Acknowledgement" My PHS sheet lists 9D0 as "ORD. ACK." with a price of $0.50 (50 cents) and no further explanation. but I've never seen that code anywhere else.

19Q - code for black bodyside molding, 1982. This may be on some build sheets, but the one I've seen was a build sheet missing it when it should've been there. Dunno about spid.. 1982 didn't get 'em.

a LOT I mean a LOT of color codes like the 19Q example tend to be missing off the build sheet. a friend of mine has a Light Jadestone 1982 Firebird S/E.. totally rare color, only about 200 - 250 cars made that way, and the build sheet barely even mentions it at all. I think there is ONE mention of color 47 on there.. maybe 47I or something. When there should be tons and tons of 45's, 47's, and 49's on that sheet.

What you have is a tag from the assembly line for the guage cluster. IP means instrument panel, test results mean it functioned when tested at GM. Kinda like when you buy a pair of Nike's and there's a sticker that says "inspected by #25". Many of our cars and GM cars in general have these tags mounted here and there. Under door panels, under the seats, under the dash, on the radio, etc.

As for the reason that some RPO's aren't on the spid and why some aren't on the buildsheets, its simple really. The SPID is just exactly what that acronym stands for. SERVICE PARTS IDENTIFACATION DECAL. Simply put, its so when you take your WS6 L98 Firebird in to have a rod knock and a suspension clunk looked at you don't get your car back with an Iron Duke and V6 springs and swaybars. Its to help the service tech order the right parts for the car.

The service tech doesn't need to know things like order information and so on, so it doesn't need to be on the sheet they use for information purposes.

Also many RPO's aren't listed in most cases cause they're part of greater option packages. Rather than list 5 RPO's for various accessory lighting, GM listed one RPO for Auxilary lighting. Kinda like G92, it included various sub-options.
