summer money
this summer i was thinking of going around to the various junkyards around my house and getting a hold of the various third gen cars. now being a college student, i have basically no money, my idea is to go through these cars, grab what is nice on them and then sell them on either ebay or here.
if i were to do this, what are some parts that people mainly look for? i am not looking for a whole lot of money, just enough to be able to put forward to my restoration project.
i will grab off anything from sheet metal to wheels and seats. i just would like to get an idea what parts are more wanted and can fetch a better price.
thanks

is it possible to bring parts in to an autoparts store and get money from the core charge? or do i have to buy the same part for this to work?

91 and 92 Z28 and Trans Am/ Formula spoilers are usually in demand. Also 91/92 T/A taillights seem to be sought after. 16" GTA style wheels are popular. Also Iroc-Z wonderbars are pretty easy to sell. And Basically any mint seats you can find (the rarer the better, Viscount PMD seats, Recaros, factory leater, GTA Matrix seats...)
Just a few ideas...

If you can get me the crossbar for an '83 Z28 mechanical clutch linkage that isn't cracked (like mine) I'd pay good money for it.
(BTW, incase you do find one, my email is arr_adam@email.com)

also how much of a demand do the noses of various third-gens have? or even the fenders, hood, back winshield deck?
is there any money for me to modify spindles so that they will work with 1LE brakes? are there many parts common to most third-gens that can get a good price if i were to take them, clean them off or sand blast them, paint them and sell them?

I'll tell you right now, there is no significant money to be made off 82-92 fbodies. I've been hitting the junkyards twice a month since 1996. I've bought various parts that are in extremely high demand, and it took months to get any profit back out of them.
Most thirdgen owners are cheap. Especially the ones that frequent the online boards. They'd rather spend days/months/years looking for a price thats $1 cheaper then to pay a fair price.
Salvage yards aren't going to sell you good used parts for any less than anyone else can get them for. So why would someone buy from you when they can make a short drive to a local yard and get the same deal?
How much time do you want to put into advertising, pulling parts, cleaning them, packing them, shipping them, etc? When its all said and done, you'd be further ahead working minimum wage flipping burgers 3 nights a week.
Don't waste your time, and don't buy anything that you can't use yourself.

Power Mirrors you can pick them up for about $25 for a set & sell them for $50 or more. & the Overhead Consol Flashlights.
Drew,
My husband & I have been selling stuff off of ebay for a while now. & We made over $800 just selling small stuff we have running around the house from his 87 iroc that was wrecked. We still have the larger stuff here at the house. because I dont want to drive to seattle to mail them out.
But you can make a hefty payoff of some items if you are smart.
Any small stuff start it off at $.99 larger stuff like flashlights seatbelts & Mirrors $9.95
Another clue is if you are wanting to sell something & there are Lots of the same thing on then hold on to it for a while Dont flood Ebay with it because it might not sell.

well,
the owner of the local junkyard is a family friend, and has often so to say hooked us up on many occasions. the state that my camaro is in right now, and in order to do the modifiacations that i want to i am already planning on buying a parts car for cheap from him. and while i am chopping off steel for various projects, it wouldn't be that much harder for me to grab off other misc. parts.
i am not nesscesarily looking for lots of money, because i want to build as many of the components that will go into my car. i am training to be a mechanical engineer, so it comes easily to me.

My neighbor picked up 2 T/A's, an 85 HO 5 sp and an 89 Auto.
He had excellent luck selling parts off the 89, He sold the sunvisors for 50, the dashpad for 145.
All told he will wind up paying 200 for the HO as the sales of parts offset his original 1300 purchase.
Best bet is to buy a complete car and part it out.
Good Luck

This guy has a whole business like you describe; although I have to agree with Drew. I have tons of good parts right from GM left over from my racing days - still new and in the original box - and have difficulty selling.
Good luck!
