Pontiac wrecked image of 3rd gen T/A?

Since I now own a Trans Am, this made me think about how Pontiac market the car.

In 69--the Trans Am was the ulimate Firebird.
Then in 87 the GTA came out. Yes it is still a T/A. So they went from 2 models to four in 87 and regular Trans Am sales nose dived.

Soon, 15" wheels were standard equpiment, with the F41 suspension and in 88
the GFX were body colur and it used the same wheels as a GTA. SO then it did almost look exactlylike the GTA. Then in 91 the Formula used the same cross lace wheels.

My point is that Pontaic took away too much appearance from the Trans Am and the handling prowess.

Am I anti- GTA? No--just too little differentaion between the two. I would have rather there was no
GTA...and the reg T/A just looked like the GTA and got it's standard 350 and WS6.

I maybe be a little off on some staements but I think Trans Am should have stayed the ultimate Firebird.

I like to think of the GTA Trans Am as a Yenko Camaro sort of. The SS was really fast but the Yenko took it to the next lvl. Also do you have any pics of your bird?

Bad shot but it will have to do. It needs some paint and a fender but has less rust then my 88 Iroc.

I think the TA and GTA both had their respective places. GTA was the ultimate TA...not a car I would have bought new, but it had its place for those who wanted the best of the best. I think its great third gen buyers had so many choices...thats what made them so special compared to 4ths!!

Think about it...

The Formula for the road racer
The T/A for those who wanted style, but weren't necessarily as concerned about all-out performance...but could option it that way with WS6
GTA was the ultimate, period

Whats the matter with that lineup? Personally, I woulda bought a 5 speed TPI Formula...mmm...would love to find a low mileage one in the near future. It would go along nicely with my dad's...an '02 Sunset Orange 6 speed Formula :hail:

i am always in the look out for a 91 - 92 tpi 5 speed firebird, no matter if its a formula / trans am / gta.

formula / trans am / gta doesnt matter as long as its a firebird

nothing wrong with the camaro's at all

Personnaly i dont think that T/A is just style really, i mean yeah its nothing compared to GTA, but its pretty much the same body xcept some fenders, and for people that really want some power, they're gonna take apart whatever is under the hood anyway, so in the end it really doesnt matter what it was stock, I own a 86 t/a, not many people seem to like 86 cause it wasnt 100% developed power yet, which makes them cheaper and more affordable for peoplel like me that are on a budget luckily i got one with every option

That is not true completely, some people want power but have to pass probe test which must pass emissions code for that year. Which means you must have original equipment. Which is why many people want fast stock cars

that is true yes, but you can still pass emissions with non stock stuff under the hood, you can have a built up 350 and pass as a 305, theres people out there that have built up 383's and pass as 350's
