If it is a 350 TPI it will say L98 on the engine sticker. If it is a 305 TPI it will be a LB9 and LG4 if it's a carb. However there was no L98 in a T/A in '86.

What I love is when these guys pull out the 305TPI's and shove a holley 350 with a 5spd that wouldnt pass inspection if its life depend on it. This car sounds like a project car, but good for the money. Even if it is just a body.

The only thing you can do is see what engine the car came with originally. It will say what engine code it was on the underside of the hood. On the labels. But there was no factory L98 for 1986. Sucks but that is the way of things.

Which is not to say that the car doesn't have one. It could have an LS1 for all you know. (Doubt it) The only way to know what it is for sure is to get casting numbers.
