Camaro Models

Hey! What's up? I'm a newbie here, so please bare with me. I used to have a 1991 Pontiac Firebird V8 305 TBI 5.0L and what not. Unfortunatly I was unable to keep the car as my engine froze--don't want to get into it. So anyway, I've been thinking and at first I did not want to get another Firebird, or at least a 3rd gen, because I already had one, fell in love with it, and it wouldn't be the same. But the more I think about it, the more I say, ok, I'll get one. But I was thinking maybe I get a Camaro instead. I figured, I like them both, even though I slightly like the Firebird more, but I like the Camaro as well, and I'd probably feel more comfortable having a Camaro instead of another Firebird, I'm just weird like that.

Anyway, my question is what are the different model types for the Camaro and what do they mean? Any help would be good. Thanks.

You want an 87-92 350 TPI G92 or 305 5-Speed G92 IROC-Z or Z28. Do some research in our Tech Data on the main page. https://www.thirdgen.org/tech/techdb.shtml

Camaro Z/28 (performance model)
Camaro IROC-Z (highest performance model)

IMO, the only ones to go after are a Z/28 or an IROC-Z. The IROC was made from '85 to '90, and the Z/28 was made from '82-87, '91-92.

Both were available with a few 305ci engines (4bbl, TBI, CFI, and TPI) and there was a 350ci engine from '87-92.

I think the 350 was available in both the Z/28 and the IROC in all years it was available from '87-92, but I could be wrong.

As for a manual trans, the 4 speed (Saginaw or Super T10) was available on V8s only in '82. From '83-92, the T5 5-speed was used and only available on the 305s. The T5 was never available with the 350, only the 700R4 auto.

T-tops were available for the Z/28 and the IROC from the start for all years and both the 305 and 350, but not available for the 350 in '91 and '92.

You forgot the Berlinetta which was available from 82-86. The Type LT was a second gen model. The LT was available in 87 only and was the replacement for the Berlinetta. I know it sounds like I'm being picky, but I own an 87 LT, and it's not a Type LT.

The only Z28s available with a 350 were 91-92. 82 to 87 Z28s were all 305s. All Z28s from 88-90 were IROCs by default.

To be even MORE picky, the '88-'90 Camaros with RPO Z28 were not Z-28s; the Z-28 model was dropped in favor of the IROC-Z model and then reintroduced for '91.

If you meant Camaros with RPO Z28 in the first place, I apologize for "correcting" you

It depends upon how you look at it. In my opinion all IROCs are also Z28s. Not only do they carry the Z28 RPO code, but they say it blatantly on the vehicle in several places. So they are both.
