87 Formula questions

Guys, Im looking at an 87 formula and have a few questions. The car is yellow with black interior and all the options. Even the power seats and the performance sound option. It is a TPI WS6 car. Originally a 305 5 speed, but now has a GM crate 350 that was installed at a dealer by the previous owner who was a tech there. Is it true that these cars did not come with the 350/5 speed combo originaly? If so, why?
This car has a brand new paint job to factory specs that looks like new and has the correct striping on the bottom. Interior is very nice with no rips or wear. Only thing is console is bulging out by the shifter on the driver side. Runs perfect, looks perfect. Has 82k miles on the car with the 350 crate motor being installed at 79k. New clutch also installed at the same time along with a flowmaster cat back. Do you guys think this car is worth $6000? Thats what the guy wants. Everything looks original and all accesories work. A/C converted to R134. Thanks alot.

yes its true they never came with a 350/5 speed combo stock. Reason is because the stock t-5 cant hold up to that kind of torque for long. It can survive but it can survie longer behind a 305. GM didnt want to have to spend money with warranties replacing the transmissions and such.

And the performance numbers would pass up the base Corvette. Usually the Camaro is underrated so the performance numbers appear less than the Vette, but the 350 5 speed combo would put the base numbers over that of the base Vette by default and that is a GM no no.

i've always heard that that a manual wasn't offered with a 350 was for this reason. GM didn't want to have to deal with problems with the weak unibody frame arising from that combo. they didn't think it would hold up well.
