Cross-fire Air Cleaner Restoration??
Cross-fire Air Cleaner Restoration??
Hello, Due to some rust, I sandblasted the air cleaner from my 82 Trans Am Cross-Fire Injection engine. I painted it black but it just doesn't look right. Stock there was almost a texture to it, does anyone know what they were coated with or have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance, Steve

you can get the wrinkle finish paint at most Pep Boys or Napa part stores I think. Year One carries it in their Mopar cataloge for use on valve covers and air cleaners. A friend used to use it one the motors on his Harleys with good results. Chris
Thanks alot for your help... I picked some semi-gloss black wrinkle finish paint up this afternoon and it looks perfect, I didn't even know they made such a thing especially for valve covers and air cleaners.
My only problem now is... how much of the aircleaner gets painted with this paint and what is "plain" paint? My guess it the bottum in smooth and inside of the top is smooth with the outisde of the top being wrinkle finish ???? Thans again! Steve

Hello, awesome thanks. Just to confirm, the bottom part where the filter sit is semi-gloss black (not wrinkle finish)???
And one last question: Anything you can recommend to replace the 'gaskets' that are found under each 'wingnut'? Thanks again! Steve

There are no wingnuts on the air cleaner lid. Should be 2 *****.

Hello, yeah the *****, I didn't know what to call them, under where the ***** go, on the top of the lid there is 2 gaskets or foamy like things (round, about the size of a nickel) that are glued down. My orginals couldn't be saved. I doubt new are avalible so I'm after the next best thing. Thanks, Steve
I would have to check one of my cars on that one, but there still pack up for the winter. Picturing it as you described, how about using a couple rubber or polyethylene washers. Any hardware store should have them.
Your best bet would probably be to luck out at a junk yard and take them off a LU5 yourself. Many of the air cleaners you see on eBay are for Corvettes. Those have a long stem on the ****. The LU5's do not have a stem.
