Is This GTA A Good Buy????
Hello all... I'm a newbie here... sorry for the stupid question... but I found an 88 GTA for $4000 with 45k miles... it's absolutely immaculate... auto though... but I can live with that...
I used the VIN Decoder link on this site and got the following results:
Made in: United States
Manufacturer: General Motors
Make: Pontiac
Carline Code: F-Body
Carline Series: Trans Am, Formula
Body Type: 2 door coupe (hatchback)
Restraint System: Manual belts
Engine Code: 350 ci V8 B2L/L98 (1987-1992)
7 is the CHECK DIGIT
Model Year: 1988
Assembly Plant: Van Nuys
Production Sequence: 225741
Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
350ci.

I think with the current direction 3rd gens are going in price it sounds like a reasonable deal. the 350 was ONLY availble with an Auto. Does it have T-tops??? if it does then its a keeper for sure.
Some of the GTA options available in 1988 that you might look at:
-Digital Dash
-Steering Wheel radio controls
-should have the articulating seats
-GTA's never had the fender vents on the front Fenders
-Overhead console??? (it was last offered in 1987 or 1988 I forget)
-subwoofer control on the dash
good luck
John

Car: 1990 GTA Black/Black lthr
Engine: 305 TPI stock
Transmission: T-5
Axle/Gears: 3.42
My less than mint 1990 went for $200 less. It's black on black leather and has 73K miles. It's a 305 5 speed, 100% original except for the radio. Has t-tops, although this isn't a big deal to me.
I had to replace the engine and tranny mounts and the air conditioner needed a re-charge. It still needs a new clutch and could use an exhuast replacement (it sounds good and aggressive, but I'm sure it's not performing good).
And it needs valve stem seals (blue smoke on startup).
It has a few minor dents and dings, and has rust bubbling in a small section in the rear quarter from a repair.
I sort of think I got ripped off at $3800, but it runs absolutely incredible. The oil stays nice and clean. I wish I would have made sure to get a mint body because no one likes having to do body work, but the fact that it runs in such great shape takes a lot of the worry away.
Also, I like the fact that it's a stick, leather, fairly low miles, and hasn't been hacked up. I just wish the body was mint so that I could start taking it to shows.
One think you must watch out for is to make sure it's no a counterfeit GTA. In the console box, there should be a sticker. Look for a Y84 code. That is the only 100% sure way to tell a GTA from a Trans Am. The VIN decoder can't tell from the serial number if it is for sure a GTA.

Anyone notice that rusty *** alt pulley? I'd poke around quite a bit before shelling out that cake for that car.

Hate to tell you but looking at the car and miles it looks like it will go for more than $4k.But none the less it's a f*ckin nice gta.

I would buy it. The altinator pulley is no biggie, and the wear on the seat is common.
