yea

look up under the car so you can see the bumper

touch a magnet to it.

if it sticks, its steel. if it doesnt, its alum.

i have a friend with a 4cyl 83 camaro.. i bought the alum bumper off of it... we just havent gotten around to pulling it off yet.

i plan to weigh them when i goto swap them

thanx to all that posted on this it can't be a TA the plastic support combs on this 1 seem to be the shape of a Camaro bumper cover I had a little trouble with fitting it up but that was just an alignment issue , just a little tight on the air holes on the 85-92 bumper cover

Tonight, I weighed my supports:

The stock steel bumper support weighs 30.6 pounds whereas the aluminum bumper support weighs 21.6 pounds.

There is a nine pound weight savings in the aluminum bumper support.

Cheers everyone,

I just did this swap about a week ago on my GTA. My orignal support is steel and was damaged. I went to the junk yard and got one off a 90 bird. I like the fact that it is weight off the nose.
Laters,
Conrad

Early 3rd gen...D'oh
I am wishing to view blow up charts of the bumper essemblies but have no body manual or service manual as the 1989 is in demand due to ...anniversary car maybe?? dunno
Either way, anyone got some scans?? The later 3rd gens are preferred in my case, though I heard you can swap noses around. I like the late 80s contrasting rub-strips

mines steel on my 82 TA, so it looks like TA in 82 were not important enough to get alum, or they ran out of alum or something,

9 pounds, big deal, id rather have the extra 9 pounds and the extra strength, can lose 9 pounds another way very easily

Got the latest Classic Industries Firebird Catalog, was suprized to see that they have reproductions of the Aluminum Front Bumper Brace. $69.95, annother option if you can't find one in the Salvage yard. By the way it is listed as a replacement for 85 - 90.

Another way to tell is to look at the braces & brackets that bolt it to the frame. On the steel they are welded,on the alunimun they are either bolted or riveted on.

You people that are doing this project, how about a step by step photo montage? I'd really like help on mine to save money over a shop charge. I think I have the tools. I bought a red cover for my white 89 but no metal brace or honeycomb fixture. Can a trans am one work? I see these on eBay and have been actively bidding but also actively OUTBID as well. There is a 91 Camaro RS at the local junkyard BTW...hehe
Was there yesterday needing an 88 Deville bumper, they wanted $160 normal, or $140 to pull it for me. Too much for a used one that is less then mint me thinks
