6 digit odometer

I have never seen this before on our cars. Allways the 7 digit.
This picture is from a 1983 FIREBIRD SE H.O. Just thought I would post this piece of history.

Thats normal. Beginning in 1982 Pontiac introduced the 7-digit odometer on the 3rd-gen F-body. I guess by 1983 Pontiac figured the car wouldn't last more than 100,000 miles so they went back to a 6-digit odometer like the 1st and 2nd-gens. The 7-digit odo didn't return until I believe the mid-1986 140MPH speedometer but the 85MPH and others remained 6-digit odo's well into the late 80's. I THINK the export kilometer speedometers always had a 7-digit odo.

I rolled over the 6-digit odo in my '84 T/A back in 1999. It says 24,000 on the gauge now but the rusty body says 124,000

Common for GM, they used the six digit on early 3rd gen cars. I have one on my 87 IROC-Z and only have 892 miles on it now.
Thats why you have to be careful on some low mileage cars, that 30000 miles could be 130000 miles.

My 83 T/A has that exact speedo, with 6 didgets. and It does show 36,000 miles But considering the condition I woudl think its more like 136,000 miles...

I initially thought that the Firebirds only got 67 didgets until they went to the electronic Speedo in 1986, I did not know about the 1982 7 didget version that Dens71TA talking about...

Interesting, I've never actually seen one without a trip meter.... every one I've seen here is in km/h with a trip meter.

Good to know. Here is a 1984 15th Anniversary Trans Am it is a 84 with 7 digits is this because of the higher speedometer?

Its because its in kilometers. 140km = 85MPH. That must must have been an export 15th Ani T/A.

Yes there was. With the power monster 2.8L V6 HO engine. It made a massive 125 or 135HP
