88 GTA--settle this

Friends mom (she must be in her 70's) bought a 88 GTA

305 TPI/auto. It has rear disc brakes. I say they were an option (drums were on 305 GTAs unless otherwise specified)

--friend says they were standard equipment.

Who is right?

Pretty sure that's an option. But I'm not positive on that.

Discs came as std with WS6 didn't they? And didn't the GTA have WS6 as std? That would make rear discs std equipment on a GTA, no?

I could be very wrong though... I don't know the Firebird's option packages as well as the Camaro's.

If memory serves disk brakes were standard on the GTAs unless you ordered the 305/700R4 combo, then you got bumped down to drums. If that car has disks anyway I guess that could be considered an option.

The link shows discs as a standard part of the GTA option package, which it was IF you ordered the GTA exactly as it was packaged--with the 350. But if you changed the package and got the 305 TPI/auto combo, then discs were not available... at least, in 1987 it was that way. But the link doesn't show that.

I'd have guessed '88 to be the same, but I recently found an '88 GTA at a junkyard that had the 305/auto/disc combo(it was one that Lon(TDS) pulled the rearend out of). And since yours has the discs too, it's probably safe to say that changed in '88 and was available... but as an option or standard, I can't say.

I just recently sold my '88 GTA project car, and it was a 305TPI/700R4 car.... with rear disc brakes on it.

According to the order sheets....

1987 - Rear discs was not offered on 305/auto GTAs
1988 - Standard GTA option
1989 - Not mentioned on order sheet, but no 305/auto GTAs
1990 - Not mentioned on order sheet, but required on B2L cars
1991/92 - Moved from standard GTA option to part of R6P group
(required on B2L and LB9 w/ 5-speed GTAs, but not on
305/auto GTAs)

Basically, the rear discs were not always part of the WS6 package, which was always standard on the GTA.

I'm due for some updating on my page....
