TSB on crooked axle tubes??
Just wondering this after the following happened:
I picked up a used 10 bolt today and as I was tearing it apart I noticed one axle was hard to get out. So I looked into it and noticed the driver's side axle tube was pushed forward. Not bent, but more like the tube was pressed into the center section crooked. Everything else on the rear was intact. Brakes and all so I don't think it was hit in an accident seeing as how the shock mounts and LCA mounts are perfect. The story behind the rear was that it was pulled by a GM dealership from a running car with the customer complaining that it kept eating drivers side axle bearings. This leads me to believe it came this way from the factory, not to mention the fact that that any car was hit hard enough to tweak the rear would have been totalled.
Was there ever a TSB on such a situation?

Probably an isolated problem and a TSB (Technical service bulliton) was not submitted...
It would probably also want to dog-track and wear tires out faster than normal.
It very well could have come from the factory that way...
John.

i can tell you that i have had this happen to the 7.5" axle under a 79 caprice i had.
2.41 ratio
305 2bbl,
thm200C
the axle tubes came loose from the center housing,
the weld holes broke out
shoulda heard all the grinding and noise when making turns and such
i had to swap in another axle eventually, the middle of the axle was sagging down alot, way out of alignment
i could pull one of the axle housings out of the center housing
bad quality there man,,
or bad rust
i never did figure out how or why it happened
and never seen it happen since, and ive had and been under BILLIONS of 70s and 80s gm RWD 7.5" cars
i dunno....
so its not a myth, it can and has happened,
its as true as much as me sitting here typing it
mine sounds like it was worse than the one you had
what year and model is the one you had this happen to from ?
good luck

The tubes on the rear I bought were tight in the housing, just crooked as he//. Turns out it was a 3.42 open out of an '89 camaro.

Another set of 3.42's I can add to the pile I think I've got 10 or 11 sets kicking around here now. 3.42's aint gonna cut it in my car.

I know the racing teams would bend the rear axle tubes in order to get negative camber on the rear tires. After a while, the tech inspectors would start checking it and only allowed a small amount ... considered within spec with manufacturing.
