I was wondering if the shift indicator light on 1984 Firebird's/TA's was backlit red. I thought that all the instrumentation, gagues, radio, heater controls, was backlit red including the shift indicator light. I saw an '84 at the junkyard and took off the shift plate but the housing the bulb would connect to was white, and the inside wasn't the orange color the gauges and heater controls are. Are these susposed to be backlit red or what??

was that the shift indicator light? I know the gauges and heater controls were redish orange as I have them and they are painted an orange color as opposed to white on earlier TA's. Since the backs of the gauges were orange and the back of the bezel was orange the lights would reflect this color. All the bulbs were regular "white" changing the color bulb does not have the same effect with regular gauges.

The only reason I'm asking is because the '84 I looked at didn't seem to have a red/orange colored light housing for the shift bezel.

The shift indicators were the normal orange/red as the dash gages and heater controlled on 1984s.

The light housing is orange as well as part of the PR(D)D21 indicator plate.

The bulbs have always been clear.
