Does anyone know how many LT models were made in 1987. I saw a figure of 900 something or other somewhere but I can't remember exactly. That also seems way too low to me. If it is the case then that makes it the most rare thirdgen Camaro doesn't it, considering it was only produced that year?

The LT was not a model, but an option on the Sport Coupe. There were 84,153 Sport Coupes produced in 1987 of which 8,557 came with the LT option.Originally posted by cdartz:

You've got the year right, but not the model. The rarest REGULAR production third generation Camaro is the "20th Anniversary Commemorative Edition" Z28. There were only 744 produced, BUT most came with the IROC-Z option. There is speculation that only two dozen did not come with the IROC-Z option. I own one of these. That also seems way too low to me. You are correct that this is the figure the White Book states. However, 1987 option production figures are very exaggerated. That's because the figures listed do not include option packages (introduced in 1987). Here's a classic example:Originally posted by 91Zman:

According to the same source, there were only 6,509 Camaros produced with power windows out of a total production of 137,760. That's only 5 percent.
Doesn't this seem kind of odd, considering in 1986: 192,219 Camaros produced with 110,155 equipped with power windows (57 percent), and in 1988: 96,275 total production with 60,622 power windows (63 percent).
The reason for the discrepancy lies in the option packages sold in 1987 (one year only). There are no records indicating how many were sold, so there is no accurate record of how many LT's were produced. However, LT's came with unique tire sizes (they were all 14-inchers). All other Camaros in 1987 came with either 15 or 16-inch tires. So if you add the total number of 14-inch tires sold in 1987, you get the total number of LT's produced; 8,557. This is conclusive because no other Camaro line could receive the 14-inch tires. In conclusion, I think it's a safe bet to say that of the 8,557 LT's, 791 came with no option packages.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the info. Even with 8,557 LT's produced it's still a fairly low production option. Maybe a few years down the road when most of them are long gone mine will make a good conversation piece.

Hey Wille, good figuring
I was wondering the EXACT same thing about the LTs. I have the same White book, and I knew it had to be wrong. I mean, I've seen 3 LTs in the past 2 months!!
Plus, the White book had another '87 error. It said 12,105 350 TPI's were made, but only 3,452 IROCs were made!!! Can't be true because the IROC was the only '87 model that could have the 350 TPI!!!
Needless to say, as I was putting my website together, I was rather dissapointed to find errors like these.
Willie, was there anywhere different you have found #'s like what the white book offers??

Jason, take a look at some of the other production figures for options in 1987. They're all "goofy".Originally posted by Jason E:

As far as the LT is concerned, it is definitely a conversation piece, being that it was only produced for one year. That makes it the only third gen LT ever made. It came with specific striping unique to the LT. And if it came with the optional aluminum wheels (same as the '82 - '86 Berlinettas except they're silver, not gold) and the RPO 1SD option package (which included factory fog lamps), you've got a super rare car.

Good catch, Jason!! It's true. The only way to determine how many Z28's were produced with the IROC-Z option is to look at the tire size (just like the LT). The IROC-Z is the only Camaro that came with P245-50VR/16 tires.... Voila!! 38,889 IROC-Z's were produced out of 53,607 Z28's (52,863 Coupes, 744 Convertibles).Plus, the White book had another '87 error. It happens that 1987 was the only year that most options were only offered through the option packages. Although option packages continued thru 1992, many of the individual options were made available separately -- not in 1987. So the production figures shown in the Camaro White Book can be considered official except for 1987 options. It's too bad because it's my favorite year and there are no official records of how many Z28 convertibles (non-IROC) were made. The only other production figure I came across is the convertible beige top, which is not listed in the White Book. Only 96 out of 1,007 convertibles got it before it was discontinued only months into production.Willie, was there anywhere different you have found #'s like what the white book offers??

Willie, I'm not sure if My lt has that option code.. but I know it doesn't have fog lamps.. so I'm not sure what you mean there.. but you say the striping was unique to the LT as well? I thought so... Thats the main reason I have decided to repain it just as it was from the factory
cdartz, do you have have a pic of your car? I would love to see it (mine is the only LT thirdgen I have ever seen)

The LT had a choice of four option groupings, the 1SA thru 1SD. The 1SD included:Originally posted by 87LT:

This is not what I'm implying. The production figures contained in the White Book are as reported to them by GM. Every year listed except some of the 1987 OPTIONS are accurate.
Because 1987 was the first year Chevrolet grouped options, they did an awful job of record keeping. And we all know Chevy does a terrible job anyway -- they do not record option combinations (another story), whereas Pontiac does to some extent.

Hey 87 LT, here is a link to the web page I have for my LT. I repainted the car this year and it no longer has the 2-tone paint and stripes. I opted for the plain look. I will put the LT badges back on as soon as I have them re-chromed. Take a look and let me know what you think. This car has been totally reconstructed in the front due to a bad accident. Although I have a nicer Camaro (90 RS) I do have a special sentimental attachment to my LT.Originally posted by 87LT:

When devloping my website, I had issues with the '87 model year when using the White Book. For instance, it lists like 3,900 IROCs produced, but over 12,000 '87s had 350 TPIs...can't be real knowing the 350 was an IROC-only engine.

Jason,
I have a complete bookshelf filled with Camaro books, original GM sales literature, and magazine articles. I also have copies of internal GM documents on 1987 Camaros. But as far as production figures are concerned, my primary source is the White Book. I find it most reliable, EXCEPT 1987 options.

Cdarts, Nice car man
I only wish mine looked that good (all though I do have a pic if you want to see it) But hopefully now the engine rebuild is done, the body work can start. I too was thinking of going for a simple look but the very 80's paint scheme has realy grown on me.. now only too find a set of IROC wheels

Hey Willie,
Sorry about sounding like a broken record with my 2 posts...I've had some problems with error messages popping up after I try to post something. I didn't think the first one went through, so thats why I sent the 2nd later.
Of some interest to the 2 LT owners, I almost bought last spring a black '87 LT 305 with 70k miles for $2,000!! Just needed paint...the original rims were gone too...if I had only known how rare they were (I knew they were 1-year-only), I'd own 2 3rd gens now

Well there she is.. not much to look at, but like I said..that will change soon. I realy havent got a chance to do much to it.. the motor is completely rebuilt now, I installed an autometer tach, a cd player, the 82 Z28 fiberglass hood, and a nice fat set of 15inch wheels an tires all the way around (but I still have the original 14's).. but next is the body and suspention.. I can't wait
