I was curious as to how rare my car was. I had a chevy dealership tell me it was a 1LE car but I don't know for sure. It is a 1987 IROC Z with a TPI 305. Auto with factory 3.42 gears, 4 wheel disc brakes no factory AC and no power options of any kind.

I believe your statement is proof that dealerships know NOTHING about history of their own products. Especially if you talked to a salesman. The turnover rate for sales personnel is extremely high and most know absolutely nothing about their model line as recent as one year old, much less our third gens. It is definitely NOT the place to go for historical information.

1LE's were not produced in 1987. Only four 1LE Camaros were produced in its first year of production, 1988.

This is not unusual. It was probably a customer ordered vehicle where he/she wanted only performance options. Look for RPO 1AZ. This signifies a customer ordered vehicle, not dealership stock. Also, you state it originally came with 3.42 gears. In 1987, RPO G92 (performance axle ratio) with a 305 TPI / automatic were 3.23's. In 1987, 3.42's were available only on V6 Camaros. The 305 TPI / 5-speed cars received the 9-bolt Borg Warner rear with 3.45's. The 350 TPI cars received the 9-bolt with 3.27's. Check your RPO codes for G92 and GU5 (3.23).

I called chevy themselves a few months back to see what rear end was in my car and they said it was 3.42, they told me this from the VIN number. Then when I had my new tranny put in he affirmed this.

I'm not doubting your story, but I have to stand by what the record books say. Therefore, I stand by my first post. Only V6 Camaros got 3.42's in 1987. Again, check your RPO codes to confirm. As a double check, examine the stamping on the passenger side rear axle tube. This will confirm whether the rear axle is original to your car AND the ratio that was originally installed in it.

I myself own a 1987 IROC-Z with a 305 TPI, automatic, 4-wheel discs and the G92 performance axle ratio. It is a 3.23 (RPO GU5). The 3.42 ratio is RPO GU6.

Unique isn't the word for it. I thought all 305 1LE were 5-speeds. The one in question here is TH700R4.

All 1LE 305 Camaros were 5 speeds, and like Willie said, there were no '87 1LE's produced.

Well I guess it is not a 1LE car then but I will try to get underneath it tomorrow afternoon when I get back from the college. I will post it as soon as I can. The passenger side of the rear axle tube right???

The stamping on the rear axle tube is on the passenger side and can be viewed only when looking from the front of the car rearward. Most likely, it will not be visible so have sandpaper handy.

Example: 2TFG218D

2TF....3.73
G......Chevrolet Gear and Axle Plant
218....218th day of the year
D......Day shift*

D or 1....Day shift
N or 2....Night shift

3.42's in 1987 had either the 2HL or 2HR code, but were never installed on a disc rear axle assembly.

Well I went out there to look at it and I am going to have to jack it up to get under it and read it from the front. However from the back I say some numbers stamped on the actual rear end. Will those help us any???
