ok the iroc is either an 85,87,88, or 89. the center consol is gone so i can't go by that. another thing is it looks like an expensive option iroc. security shade and overhead console were just some of the things in it. but if it is that axle then i would like to buy it. my iroc only has 2.77 and one side of it is bent. anyway to tell??

Is the driver's seat still in there?Check under it,in the seat bottom springs(build sheet),or under the carpet,or in the door.

no the drivers seat was gone but when i took the carpet out the sheat was all ripped and stuck to the floor so when i took it out the sheet ripped more. but when i did that i wasn't looking for that code, it didn't dawn on me that i should be it until after. but is there any other ways? maybe by looking at it?

David,
If our cars were somewhat younger, it would be a safe bet that the axle ratio has not been changed by any previous owner. If this were true, you could check the code stamped on the passenger side axle housing. However, our cars are getting rather old and there's no telling if the ratio has been changed.
I would say the only conclusive way to tell is to ask the junk yard that the only way you'll consider buying the rear axle is to pull the inspection cover to examine the ring and pinion. If they'll let you do this, look at the ring gear as you slowly rotate the axle. The ring will be stamped with a part number and teeth count, i.e. 41:12. Divide the larger number by the smaller to get your axle ratio.
